Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Greco-Roman paganism got some sympathy insofar as many aspects of the Roman state religion were incorperated into Nicene Christianity. Then there's also the perception of the Romans as "virtuous pagans" which was around since the middle ages, for example in the appearance of Emperor Trajan in Dante's Paradiso for some reason.
People saying that "America is God's country" seem to be missing the point that the Christian God only ever really cared about the Middle East and European areas. Never in the history of the Christian faith was a prophet, messiah, or other great figure of Biblical legend born on American soil.
We've got some Catholic saints, but that's it. All the big movers and shakers of the Christian faith are Arabs, Greeks, etc.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I mean at least the Churches that belive in a second coming of Jesus to America having happened have an excuse for their belief, even if it's absurd. Not that I can talk, us Brits have our own myth about Jesus coming to England.
Also I realy don't think we get to give shit to the religions that early Judaism encountered, considering some of the Old Testament the Abrehamic God wasn't much better.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranHead-shaking at silliness is this thread's pastime. It's just typically directed at Trump and/or the GOP.

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you@ LASBK: Depends who the "us" is. He has repeatedly stated a desire to deport all illegal immigrants, which would get a lot of them killed. That's not getting into his disastrous climate policies and his cavalier attitude towards nuclear weapons. Trump won't institute a police state and start rounding up dissenters, but his presidency seriously would result in lots of deaths.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.

To be fair, the polytheists that early Islam and Judaism encountered were not nice people. Likely why Tiamat and Nergal and Marduk aren't worshipped today.
Apparently the early Mesopotamians did things like bring unwanted babies for sacrifice?
Could be the result of demonization but still.
