Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

We get it. But hyperbolic statements that are demonstrably false contribute nothing useful to the conversation. If that's all you can say, then don't say anything.
@Jack: Chill the bleep out, man. You've done okay about holding back on the hysteria, but that doesn't mean we'll put up with other forms of mischief like attacking users.
@Sci Fi Slasher: Don't moderate the topic. Let us do that.

So are many of us but we find ways to express that which aren't blanket hyperbolic condemnations.
And we're a long way from countries that do have strongmen intimidating people at the polls insofar as it has not actually happened yet and its unlikely people would be able to get away with it without massive uproar and in most places law enforcement moving in to intervene.

Coming out of the shadows again to drop this.
It's 270towin's electoral map showcasing the current polls of each state in either safe, lean, (for the respective candidates) or tossup. For you Clinton supporters, the map projects her at 273 E Vs with the combined safe and lean states (PA and VA included). GA and AZ are in the tossup category.
We are all made of star stuff. Very, very weird star stuff.
If the rumors about them getting their info from Russia is true, the Russians would presumably hold out on them until just before the election, at which point they'd release it because that's what they'd do, even though the responsible thing would be to wait until AFTER the election because Trump is so horrible, and it's in Putin's interest to see Trump get into power.

That might convert the Republicans that are on the fence, but people who were enthusiastically supporting Trump from the get-go are unlikely to be swayed.

In fairness, though, the thinking could then go "Well if they didn't want this shit to get out, they shouldn't have done it in the first place." Hell, I'll admit that (depending on the info and/or veracity of it) I could be discouraged from voting for Clinton - still wouldn't be Trump, but that'd be one less vote for Hillary.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"It is very amusing that the neocons, who blame Obama for Russia becoming a powerful player on the world stage, are now faced with supporting the most pro-Russian candidate their party has ever had. Same with considering Clinton a threat to national security, and now they're stuck with a guy who "jokes" that a foreign power should obtain classified material if it will help him win the election (not that he's ever cared about what was on those emails to begin with).
@Hodor: I'm worried because there's good reason to think the group that hacked the DNC got their hands on a lot more data than what was released, and the Clinton campaign expressed concern about the possibility of additional leaks further on in the election.
It also wouldn't necessarily need to be something damning about Clinton, the democratic party would do just as well.
Honestly, both the democrats and Republicans (and myself were I to go into politics) secretly long for a foreign power to do what they don't dare do for fear of suffering the consequences of getting caught.
