The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So in more "Trump does Open Mouth, Insert Foot" news, he's now advocating for an "ideological test" for new immigrants, ostensibly to weed out extremists. One bit, though, caught my eye.

The government would use questionnaires, social media, and interviews with friends and relatives to determine if people seeking to immigrate or get visas supported American values like tolerance and pluralism.

Those excluded would be people who did not believe in the US Constitution, support bigotry and hatred, believe Shariah law is more important than US law, or would not "flourish in our country".

So, much like the current immigration test - how many current US citizens would actually be able to pass it? Because the portion regarding "bigotry and hatred" coupled with religious law > US law could just as easily apply to a number of hyper-conservative Christian sects.

Yeah, and apparently the tests would involve gauging one's stance on LGBT rights. Which is pretty rich for a guy running with a party that considers LGBT individuals second class citizens at best and subhumans at worst.

I'd like very much to administer that test to some of his supporters.

Isn't acting like a whiny little kid going against his whole "strongman" persona? Blaming the voters, especially before the election, is one of the worst comms mistakes you can make.

Granted, until the last few weeks Trump has had "Protection from Bad Publicity" in play so...

No, see, if you let people blame you for something, that's a sign that you're weak. Blaming other people shows that you're strong, since you're willing to go on the attack rather than sit back and take it.

Vladimir Putin Has Already Won Your Election, apparently.

The news keeps getting worse. Alarming evidence of how deep the Kremlin’s got its tentacles in Washington mounts by the day. Large-scale hacking by Russian cyber-warriors didn’t just hit the Democratic National Committee, it stole emails from a wide array of top power-players, including the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, NATO’s military boss.

What do you mean start? Cold War never quite ended. Took a break until around 2008 but the Russians have never been friendly.

Can't we just hack critical Russian infrastructure in retaliation? Like vodka producers or the makers of dashcams?tongue

What are the odds that Russia or Wikileaks has genuinely incriminating evidence against Clinton to be released this October, versus the odds that they're just talking out of their asses?

We almost certainly already are. The difference is that Russia is getting caught, and we (so far) aren't.

Who was the name of the anchor who had to deal with Trump's current spokeswoman implying (possibly by accident) that we didn't get involved in Iraq until 2009 this past week? Because someone has to make a reaction gif of that man's face.

Giuliani is a guy I used to respect. Not anymore; guy's gone off the deep end.

On a somewhat related note, on Jimmy Fallon a few nights ago he showed a ridiculous clip of Trump telling one of his rallies something to the effect of, "Even if you hate me, even if you can't stand me, you're going to vote for me." Yeah, that logic might hold up if you had good policies to offset your obnoxiousness, but you don't.

[up] Which in many ways is probably the greatest contrast between him and Clinton. A lot of people don't like her, but she does have policies to help offset that (or make it worse in the case of folks who don't agree with those policies)

Trump doesn't have policies, good or bad. He only has vague stances, and he flipflops on those at whim.
