The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I honestly don't think Trump's cronies really care about the Russia connection. If anything, they're seen as a good model for resisting globalization in favor of revived nationalism. That they'd be a much flakier ally than Europe and that there's very little to be gained by realigning the way Trump seems to want doesn't seem to occur to them.

What matters more than Trump's fans is people on the fence, people who would vote Republican but aren't sure of Trump and so on. I think all we can hope for with his fanbase is that they get some comeuppance, hopefully not the hard way of them getting what they want.

Honestly, I don't think anything Trump can say or do will get him below ~45% of the vote. Voting for Hillary Clinton is utterly unthinkable for a good chunk of the nation, and there's a great many of people on the left who simply won't invest the same amount of time and effort into campaigning for a bog-standard centrist candidate. They'll vote for Clinton, but they won't be dragging everyone they know with them to the polls.

Reports of shots fired at JFK airport. Could be a false alarm though.

[up][up]I know there's a lot of doomsaying in regards to Trump's chances, but what I'm seeing seems to indicate that people are actually getting quite tired of his antics. His chances of getting anywhere near half the votes may be dropping in the next three months, as he will likely continue on the path he's been on.

As an amusing sidenote on Manafort's connections to Ukraine, the story was also retweeted by former Trump campaign manager (and current "paid CNN shill") Corey Lewandowski.

It's worth noting Europe's tacked far to the right after the 2008 recession. In better times, the democrats were more akin to another nation's right wing party. Centrist is a much better descriptor however.

It might be ironic that Europe has made a hard turn to the right while the U.S. is poised for a hard turn to the left.

[up][up] Milwaukee shooting: 'Shots fired' at new protests over police killing

It appears that the officer that fired the shots was a Black African-American and the man that was shot was known to Police.

The far right is so energized in Europe largely because the far right is inherently populist and Europe's leaders are not listening to their constituents. It's not like in America, where our far-right candidate is on the upswing simply because our right-wing party is self-destructing.

It probably was, but Milwaukee's a special case for racial injustice (most segregated city in America), and the catalyst for these things isn't always justified even if prior grievances were more legitimate.

"Ivanka Trump wrote unused 'clarification' on Donald Trump's Mexico comments"

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/08/ivanka-trump-mexico-clarification-226980#ixzz4HP7cRbG2

My understanding: Ivanka wrote a clarification about Trump's "Mexicans are rapists" remarks from last year that never got used. This came out in a deposition during a legal proceeding with a chef who pulled out of a Trump property/property deal in response.

The clarification was apparently that the remarks weren't attack on Hispanics in general, merely in reference to illegal immigrants, which is so much better...

There's also a few stories saying Ivanka went on a trip to South America with Wendi Deng Murdoch, ex wife of Rupert Murdoch and current girlfriend of Vladimir Putin. However I haven't found this on one of the sources I've come to rely on (Reuters, AP, Politico) so I'm in "grain of salt" mode on that one.

[up] & [up][up] I'm genuinely unsure and don't know the sources I've seen the story in when I googled it. Hence "grain of salt".

Best I could find was People magazine, which doesn't mention a Putin connection at all.

Sounds like the shooting was actually legit this time, but I guess previous incidents have poisoned the well.

I'm not sure, to be honest. As I understand, the victim was a burglar who stole a firearm and 500 rounds of ammunition. He was legitimately a criminal fleeing from a crime scene, which puts his shooting a step above all the innocent folks who've been shot by cops.

However, I haven't heard of him doing anything aggressive that would warrant shooting him. From what I've heard, he was just fleeing. Police are not supposed to shoot a suspect who hasn't threatened anyone and is simply trying to run away.

If he actually was using that stolen handgun and ammunition in a threatening manner, it would be a legitimate shooting, but so far all the stories I've heard have painted the image of a black criminal being shot to death for attempting to evade police. If so, then he's supposed to be in prison, not the morgue.

He's certainly less sympathetic than other victims of police brutality on account of the fact that we know he was guilty of a crime, but he still looks like a black man crucified on the altar of trigger-happy racism in our police force and it looks like he's the straw that broke the camel's back.
