The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Apparently Trump's campaign is still soliciting foreign politicians in an attempt to get funding. And I have to ask, if Trump is straight-up breaking laws with his fundraising campaign, why isn't he facing any consequences other than an embarrassed slap on the wrist by Paul Ryan? Are these rules unenforceable?

[up][up]Several states have banned the touchscreen machines but others who rushed in after the 2000 election when the government was offering federal funding for election tech upgrades are left holding the turd without a plan to dispose of them. Others are just blindly trusting in them.

Am I allowed to say that the people rioting in Milwaukee are criminals? I mean I'm not a fan of rioting in general, but at least in Ferguson the situation was unclear, and the police department was a croup horror story. And in Baltimore the crime was blatant, even if they didn't intend to kill him why was Erick Gardener in the police van? But these people are burning down their own city, shooting in the streets, because the cops shot an ARMED man. And frankly, and I apologize if I have no right to this feeling, am disgusted with all the activist movements and individuals who try to justify this shit.

In France? Look at the actual right-wing in France.

In Europe, there a number of strong right-wing groups the Democratic party does not even nominally resemble. People like Anders Breivik represent people like this in Scandinavia....in France, we have le Pen and her lot. Look at the way the right-wing conservatives in France nearly had riots over the legalization of gay marriage...the Democrats' social policies wouldn't be right-wing in France. Nor, in large swaths, their economic policies, their environmental policies and certainly not their stances on racial minorities and immigration.

It's worth noting Europe's tacked far to the right after the 2008 recession. In better times, the democrats were more akin to another nation's right wing party. Centrist is a much better descriptor however.

In Fascism the goal is to preserve the old order and protect it from the forces of modernization and foreign enemies, modernizing in some sectors to prevent forced modernization in others.

In China's case, or Vietnam for that matter, the State created the new order. It does pick winners and losers in the private sector much as Fascism did, but the market sector owes its existence to the state rather than the state merely being a patron.

The Week Democracy Died Okay Democracy didn't really die in a week in July, but the point remains. Liberal Democracy is facing a fundamental challenge and unless we make Herculean efforts, efforts I doubt the people in the Western World have the guts or skill to make, we will have to chose between illiberal Democracy, and undemocratic liberalism. The article itself does a much better job of explaining these things than I ever could.

Pro-Russian Ukrainian oligarchs and separatist leaders have been shifting a shit ton of money to Trump's campaign manager, Paul Manfort, since the conflict started.

It also appears Manfort was one of their bigger political consultants and allies before the conflict turned violent.

Paul Manafort was a political consultant for Ukraine's former president, Viktor Yanukovych.

I don't expect anyone to get ruined, as it kinda loses its punch if, like me, you're an ignorant American who doesn't know enough about foreign politics to be properly outraged.

Wasn't it a common conspiracy theory that Obama was secretly getting backing from various foreign nations? I love how that seems to be true with Trump.

The Canadian Liberal Party (sans Ignatieff) tends to be less hawkish than Democrats like Hillary - they utterly opposed the Iraq War and were much less hawkish on Iran - they support legalizing marijuana, and they're willing to engage in deficit spending to create jobs and fund social programs despite Canada not being in a recession. Those are some of the reasons why I'd regard them as left of the Dems - plus the stuff I mentioned about health care, mat leave, and other social programs.

Granted, the Libs move with the political winds and are currently at probably their most left-wing point in the last 20 years (partly a reaction to their previous, more right-wing and hawkish leader, the aforementioned Iggy, experiencing the party's worst-ever defeat in 2011).

I fully acknowlegde that the Overton Window is at a different place in the US than in Canada. That's why it's so important for the Dems to advocate and implement progressive policies and push it back leftwards, after the last 35 years of it moving to the right.

It may get across more plainly if they can link Manafort more directly with Russia or pro-Russian interests. It's known, at least, that Russia had its players in the game there.

In short, it adds more weight to the scale that Russia or Russian interests might be playing an active role in backing Trump.

[up][up][up]The news is more about who was paying him rather than who he openly worked for. Also, there may have been money laundering involved.
