Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes, and I have a feeling that's Trump's plan. So long as it doesn't tie back to him, I doubt he cares what his supporters do and what laws they break in order to get him votes.
@Handle: Any means necessary? Well no, Trump getting elected legitimately is something that would (probably) be the lesser evil to him losing illegitimately; were the democrats to be caught red handed cheating, or were Trump to be assassinated...Well the odds of someone more competent but no more scrupulous taking up the Trump mantle would be much better.

Any means necessary that would result in a desirable outcome. In other words, this goes beyond the usual "pull yourselves together, the political enemy du jour is the worst thing ever". This requires exceptional measures of solidarity, passion, and dedication. None of that right-hand-fighting-left-hand bullshit. If Trump wins, we're all fucked.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I keep getting Trump adds on my Facebook page. Is there a way to stop them from coming?
Leviticus 19:34Do they show their state by state methodology anywhere? I can't find it.

Ah, Trump's news source of choice. Perhaps second only to the fucking National Enquirer.
I read it, and it's just restating what he said elsewhere, just with the emphasis quotes on "cleanse" (no duh). It's quite clear they assume it speaks for itself, to their readers.

Welp, I just mailed a letter to the NRA:
I am a Life member of the NRA. I am also a professionally-trained gunsmith and a lifelong firearms enthusiast, so I well know the necessity of defending our Second Amendment rights. However, I cannot, in good conscience, agree with your supporting Donald Trump for president. Furthermore, I object to your narrow-minded focus upon a single issue in selecting political candidates for endorsement. One tree does not make a forest.
Your magazine merely repeats the same paranoid propaganda that I’ve been hearing for the last thirty years, and it has grown stale and tiresome. In maintaining a death-grip upon the Republican party (which, I believe, has gone off the deep end in recent times), and by endorsing a lunatic like Donald Trump, the NRA is driving away political moderates like myself. Please cancel my membership immediately.
Sincerely,
Well done. I've heard multiple gun owners say they only support the NRA because, despite disagreeing with them on nearly everything, they're the only organization that promotes pro-gun legislation at all. If enough people leave because of Trump (or anything else), maybe we can get a gun organization that isn't completely bonkers.
In other news, when are the debates scheduled? And has Trump said anything about them?

The NRA isn't the only game in town; there are other lobbying organizations out there. Gun Owners of America, the Second Amendment Foundation, and the National Shooting Sports Federation are a few that come to mind...
Of course, the NRA has always been the biggest kid on the block, but they're shooting themselves in the foot (so to speak) this time.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank. So, remember how everyone before 2016 kept saying "X is the most important election of our lifetimes!" and everyone knew it was hyperbolic and nodded along anyway, fully knowing it was just campaign hype?
Yeah, no. This literally IS the most important election in our lifetimes, probably since the election of Lincoln, tbh.
New Survey coming this weekend!
Regardless of the outcome of the 2016 election, the 2020 election will be framed in the same way. Campaigns will hype up every election like the current one, regardless of how important or unimportant they are. Which has the unfortunate side effect of making the population skeptical of claims that "this election is the most important EVAH".

A McCain victory in 2008 probably wouldn't have been apocalyptic. So, that one, I guess.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.I can't predict the future, but for the minorities in this country, this is a fucking important election. It'll determine whether or not my neighbors are rounded up and shipped off to another country. It'll determine if my friends are sent to "ex gay therapy". It'll determine if we get three new supreme court justices who could take away my sister's right to an abortion. It'll determine if my niece's best friends have a high risk of being shot by racist cops who get off scot free.
This is the most important election I've lived through.
Personally, I doubt Trump actually cares about any of those things, and the fact is, most of the GOP establishment that would be fighting over the position of Grand Vizer are no different. Trump's real threat is the threat he poses to American democracy, if not personally than by creating an opening for someone more competent with autocratic ambitions to seize the Republic with his incompetence and his legitimization of bald faced demagoguery and voter intimidation.

For the life of me calling for election fixing like that has to be a crime. Someone stop him...
