Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So Preet Bharara, the US Attorney for Southern NY, is investigating the Clinton Foundation.
This is bad. Why? He caused a diplomatic incident with the Indians over investigating the Indian vice consul in New York. Meaning he either doesn't give a damn about the consequences (which is my belief), or if one believes Obama wanted to create ruckus with the Indians, Bharara's investigation will be seen as biased in Hil's favor.
Bahara has formed an extremely good reputation in the NY area in the past few years for investigating and exposing corruption, even when roadblocks have been put in his way by the state government.
If there's any fire to go with all the smoke Republican figures have been putting out, he'll find it. If there isn't, he has the credibility to say so, and no one who isn't in the bag for Trump already can question it.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |The CBC projection now has Clinton getting 270+ electoral votes in states that are considered Safe (Vs Leaning or Likely).

I went off to double check my memory and make sure I had the right guy before posting this, but among Bharara's notable moments are bringing down both Dean Skelos (Republican head of the NY Senate) and Sheldon Silver, (Democratic head of the NY Assembly) Wall Street firms, big fines on large banks, and more on top of the Indian consul thing.
He was also part of an ethics committee or some such that Cuomo put together for the sole purpose of scaring lawmakers into signing a reform package, then kept investigating anyway when Cuomo dissolved the committee after the reform package passed, and threatened to charge Cuomo when the governor was trying to get him to go easy on Silver and Skelos.
Dude doesn't give a fuck.
I saw something yesterday saying if the election was today, Clinton would win with 349 Electoral Votes, (270 is required to win) which would come very close to Obama's 2008 victory.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |@Bharara taking down that consul - Doesn't matter if it was just. He endangered American diplomats in New Delhi because of "justice". There is a reason why diplomats are treated differently than locals, and it is enshrined in law, not merely practice.
And if there is fire to the smoke about the Clinton Foundation, I do not trust him not to make it a thing before November. I do not want his sense of justice being the reason the US gets President Trump.

It was only a matter of time before this happened, but say hello to Donald Trump's "Election Monitors" (read: brown shirts)
. Which is part of the reason I'm not counting the Donald out just yet; widespread electoral violence could dramatically change the shape of the race.

Ok, now it's REALLY not funny any more. That kind of vote fixing and bullying is an extremely bad sign.
and apparently people are predicting he is going to win.
