Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump might not be in a very good position if those Trump U lawsuits go all the way, and he's lost some critical junctures for class action suits (first losing in the effort to stop the plaintiffs from registering as a class, and then having his bid for summary judgment rejected, meaning this will go in front of a jury which opens him up to a possible world of hurt), plus the fact that he may well face RICO charges based on how Trump U was structured, which means triple damages (though i don't know how that separates out from the civil trial, i'm not a lawyer, but it does mean triple damages somewhere).
Edit: to clarify, he's got two class-actions and possibly a criminal case opening up (not sure how the RICO factors in). Between them, he personally is being sued, along with his corporation, so both of those could be decimated in a year or so (depending on how long he drags the trial out).

Trump's sense of understatement might actually match the size of his ego.
In other news: Hitler "Somewhat" racist.
(Hey it's not Godwin's Law when actual Nazis (As in "I willingly will call myself and identify as a Nazi in polite company and in front of the press") supporters.)

A piece by NBC/MSNBC reporter Katy Tur and her experience in covering the Trump campaign since about last Summer.
Wonder what he does with lemons.

He sounds like Zapp Brannigan.
To prove it, Billy West (The voice of Zapp Brannigan), started reading Trump quotes in Zapp's voice

There are also a bunch of memes of Zapp saying Trump quotes.
Wow, dat Editor's Note:

Yes, so they took it too the next level by having Zapp actually say them.
Yeah, Huffpost started putting that notice at the end of every Trump article about mid way through the Primaries, as they felt most media were going easy on Trump, willing to just report the dumb shit he does without condemning it.
BTW, for all the Trump Quotes, look at Billy West's Twitter, he's adding more as he makes them
.

I'm personally fond of the quiz someone made a bit back
to see if people can tell the difference between things Donald Trump has said and things Frank Reynolds from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has said.
There's also a test between Trump and some gangster character from a TV show I can't recall. That one was pretty easy-Trump is less eloquent.
A much better one is Trump vs. Mussolini, which is actually quite difficult.
Leviticus 19:34I suppose a possible flaw is that it's probably quite possible to cherry-pick quotes that sound similar.
Leviticus 19:34True. Out of curiosity, I googled Mussolini speeches and found this page
.
From just perusing them, I don't really see much similarly to Trump- it's closest to occasions when Trump reads from a pre-written speech off of a teleprompter.
There's a fair amount of sort of communistic vocabulary that wouldn't likely be found in a Trump/American politician's speech (references to people as comrades and fighting a Revolution) and a combination of awkward use of elevated vocabulary with some genuine eloquence.
Also, a couple of highbrow references. Like one speech talks about Lord Byron's commentary on his visit to Italy/his countryman and Mussolini uses this to slag off on the English. And he also references the Roman dictator Sulla and says that Roosevelt is more like him than Hitler or himself.
Definitely a bad guy but a fairly good orator.
Edit- Although, I should note that all of the speeches on the page are from during World War II/when Mussolini was in power, which probably makes them different than the kind of speeches Mussolini gave before seizing power, which I think are the ones the Trump/Mussolini quiz used.

First few paragraphs:
“Every time I see a member of the establishment say they’re not for Donald Trump, I say, 'Check the box, because he’s for the American people,’ ” Pence, Indiana's governor, said to enthusiastic applause at a town hall meeting.
The event came a day after Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Trump doesn’t reflect historical Republican values or an inclusive approach to governing.

And have some more Trump-as-Brannigan quotes
. #Make America Brannigan. I personally lost my shit at a quote from a Playboy interview in 2004 - emphasis mine. "Usually if I fire someone who's bad, I tell them how great they are, because I don't want to hurt peoples' feelings."

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"That said, Mike Pence sat on a pardon request from an innocent man for 2 years
. As in, even the witnesses think he is innocent. Law and order.
In things that really should not surprise you, Trump's claim that Obama founded Daesh is a near verbatim repetition of Russian government-aligned media and blog claims
. I feel really bad for the former US Ambassador to Russia for running face first into those guys. Anyone care to help me buy him a drink if they run into him?
And two of those flunkies are even in the public eye right now. One for the Michelle Obama speech plagiarism, and one for coming out against Trump, telling people not to vote for him, and IIRC apologizing for the part he played in making Trump into a national phenomenon.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

So what was his response to the news that Osama died while Obama was still president?
