Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm so glad that Trump is now being pushed by the literal Nazi party because it means I can stop feeling self-conscious whenever I invoke Godwin about him.
The combination of Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Assembly.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. From a local paper, more for the heck of it than anything, Trump is doubling down on his claim Obama found ISIS:
Trump refuses to back away from false claim Obama founded IS
http://www.idahostatesman.com/latest-news/article94988532.html
"Donald Trump repeatedly accused President Barack Obama of founding the Islamic State group on Thursday, refusing to take back a patently false allegation, despite the urging of some of his allies to do so."
The man is Looney Toons. He's bonkers. He's off his nut. He's a handful of loose screws wrapped up in an orange fursuit.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Has Trump ever backed away from a false claim? My impression is that part of his notoriety in regards to fact-checking comes not only from the fact that much of what he says is blatantly false, but that he never backs down from a false claim when it's pointed out that the claim is false.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman"No, I meant he's the founder of ISIS. I do," Trump said, using another acronym for the extremist group that has wreaked havoc from the Middle East to European cities.
OK way to turn what could've been a valid if misleading evaluation of foreign policy matters into complete raving lunacy.

Interestingly enough, I just came across an article on that very issue, which focuses on the ISIS claim
. I particularly love the exchange with Hugh Hewitt, who is sympathetic to Trump and unsuccessfully tried to get Trump to re-characterize his remarks in a less insane way.

I doubt he's thinking that far ahead. He doesn't seem to be a particularly long term planner, and despite all this I see nothing that indicates any of his children want to permanently enter into politics themselves. They're just trying to steer their father in a productive direction, and if this attempt fails I think they'll probably just go back to what they were doing. (Probably do the same in the event of success, given they're adults and probably aren't going to give up their business for four years.)
And yeah, Trump wants to win. He's just very used to his refuge in audacity tactics working for him and is too egotistical and stubborn to listen to advice that it's not helping him at all right now.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."The idea that everyone secretly believes the things Trump openly says worked for him in the primary because it was actually true for a lot of GOP supporters. Enough to win the primary, at least.
But not only is it not true for most Independents and Democrats, but the fatal decision to attack a Gold Star family is even costing him a lot of his support among the "F*ck minorities!" crowd. I've said this before, but military is sacred in the GOP. During the DNC, Trump finally found a line he never should have crossed with his own supporters.

I wholeheartedly agree.
In non Trump news:
"U.S. agency denies petition to reclassify marijuana" - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSL1N1AS1I5
"The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration on Thursday denied requests to stop classifying marijuana as a dangerous drug with no medical use, leaving users and businesses in limbo after many states have legalized it for medical or recreational purposes."

x5 Anyone else find it ironic that in Germany, it's a crime to display Nazi memorabilia outside a museum and that they're actually trying to throw off that stigma, but in America, you can sympathize with a slaveocracy that rebelled against your own country and build monuments to them because of "Freedom of Speech"?
Honestly, we need to change what we consider "Freedom of Speech". It is not the 1800s anymore.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."As infuriatingly ignorant and annoyingly asinine as these opinions are, I'm instinctively nervous about measures regarding free expression of ideas in general. I tend to think that declaring by law such and such ideas to be illegal or otherwise bad would be counterproductive insofar as it doesn't allow a more solid reasoning of why it's bad/deplorable to take root - the ideas get glorified and washed up in a forbbidden knowledge way. I also worry about such efforts ending up suppressing actually valid or at least worthy of consideration aspects that get caught up in the efforts.

The damned queen and the relentless knight. Why Defend Freedom of Icky Speech?
- tossing Gaiman's essay into the ring cause I'm lazy today. (Admittedly, it's more about smut than hate speech.)
Also think it's worth noting: if this were any other election, the what the American Nazi party thought wouldn't even be news-worthy. They're as far to the fringe as fringe gets, they have no ballot presence and no one would give them airtime.

A Trump campaign manager resigned after it surfaced that he pulled a gun on people on more than one occasion.
One of the people who had a gun pulled on him is suing the former manager after the Trump campaign failed to act on his complaint.
