Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump and others are anti-vaccination are they not? What is that but an elaborate way of euthanising your child? That's before you get into them being pro-abuse and tourture when it comes to LGBT kids, abuse and tourture that often leads to suicide. They're totally okay with people killing their defenceless children in certain circumstances.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranDouble posting due to this deserving its own post. Got an update from 538, shit has gotten absurd. They now have Clinton winning Gerogia, Arizona and Nebraska's second district, not only on the now-cast but also the polls-only prediction, but the best is their latest now-cast prediction.
If the election was held today Clinton would win not only North Carolinia, not only Georgia, not only Nebraska's second district, not only Arizona, but also South Carolina! South bloody Carolina, that'd been a clean east coast sweep.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo I just search for the last time a Dem swept the entire East Coast, it was 1912 when Woodrow Wilson won in a four way race between himself, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft and a Socalist that won 6% of the vote. Even then he didn't win a 50 state sweep. Franking Rooservelt came close in '36, '40 and '44 but never managed to grab Maine.
It's strong but it's not insane, if she somehow pulled Texas and Oklahoma it would be truly craze, this is just incredibly good.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI am particularly interested in Georgia because from what I know, that's a high hanging fruit given the low amount of undetermined votersnote in comparison to e.g Arizona.

People have been viewing her with suspicion this entire time. From claiming Sanders was cheated out of the nomination to Trump claiming the general election is rigged, it doesn't really matter what happens. The die-hards will call her a cheater.

That sort of thing is Older Than Feudalism. In ancient Greek history, when the Greeks won a battle, it was because the Greeks were magnificent. Whenever somebody else defeated them, it was due to luck, or some underhanded tactic, or a turncoat who betrayed them...
"The Trojan Horse? Oh, that wasn't a sneaky, underhanded ploy. That was a brilliant strategic maneuver."
"Bankruptcy? Oh, that wasn't a commercial failure. That was a shrewd business plan."
Excuses are like assholes: everybody has one, and they all stink.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Relevant: Most Americans think the election is rigged.
(slams head into desk)
If we do get a democrat landslide in both the presidential elections and in the downticket...Well we'll finally get to see Clinton's true colors, for better or worse.
That also would, unfortunately, leave an opening for the GOP to pull themselves back together and sell the millenial generation on their moronic economic policies by dropping the militarism and bigotry. It would be just like the democrats to have a generation stolen out from under their noses (again) by taking their goodwill for granted.
Note that the survey didn't specify "voter fraud". Voter suppression is very real, and there's a number of states where it's very difficult to say that elections are not rigged (or that they are rigged) due to lacking oversight.

Right, that article is a typical example of attention seeking behaviour. How do they think it's rigged? By wealthy people or by illegal immigrants?

Elections aren't rigged. Crackpot third parties are just salty about not obtaining mainstream support.
Our elections have simply never been conducive to high voter participation, but things like ballot stuffing and dead men rising to vote for a candidate are a thing of the past. Screaming that elections are rigged is a thing insane old white men do. Don't be like insane old white men.

That's on (the collective) you to prove, and (the collective) we aren't willing to spend the money (on exit polls) to conclusively prove that in many states. Though given you've expressed open disdain for democracy in the past, I suppose that collective you doesn't actually include you.

I take it you'd also very much prefer to live in a dictatorship? Skepticism of power and cynicism regarding the powerful is an integral part of maintaining a democracy; to paraphrase various liberal philosophers: "democracy ceases to be when it is taken for granted."

In fairness, just look back at what happened in the Maricopa County primary - regardless of whether it was deliberate or not, people being purged from voter rolls (including someone in the AZ Secretary of State's own office) and 8-hour lines does not inspire voter confidence in the system.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"![]()
The hell does that have to do with anything? If you're making an extraordinary claim (elections are rigged), then asking for extraordinary proof is a legitimate response. "It's OBVIOUS, why won't you WAKE UP SHEEPLE?!" does not constitute proof.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. It is generally safe to assume that, in any state where Republicans have maintained control of the legislative process, there are attempts at voter suppression. However, evidence is still required if one is to sustain such a claim.

It is almost universally agreed upon by philosophers of democracy across history that a democratic society requires constant vigilance on the part of its citizens against attempts by particular entities ro subvert the system for their own benefit. That being the case, an absence of compelling evidence against electoral tampering is still a concerning matter.

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller is in talks to lead Trump's agriculture team.
A federal district judge suggested the McLennan County district attorney has a conflict of interest while prosecuting the criminal cases of the bikers involved in the May, 2015 Waco biker shootout after civil rights lawsuits against him were made by bikers who claimed innocence in the shooting, but were detained and given bond without justification.
