The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And some random conservative has launched an independent run. That might last a week or two.

[up][up][up]This fiction is still circulating? While 4 more years of Obama is far preferable to Trump the idea that he'd refuse to step down is absurd.

What would even happen in that scenario? I'm guessing the previous president would be guilty of treason or something.

The important question is, if McMullin's run does hold, will it siphon Trump voters who supported him for lack of other options, or more adversely effect Clinton's ability to woo disaffected Republicans?

This "Obama secretly wants to suspend the elections" conspiracy theory is really gettin' old. Obama has made it clear numerous times that he wants to leave the White House when his second term is up. Given what he's had to put up with the last eight years, can anyone blame him?

[up][up] The only scenario I could imagine something like that happening under is a situation where nobody wins the general election, the vote goes to congress which subsequently deadlocks on both president and Vice President picks, leaving the incumbent effectively still in power.

Refusing to step down is the sort of thing Trump would do. Trump is projecting his own faults onto others, but anybody with half a brain would realize that they don't stick.

[up]X5 Thing is he doesn't even step down, he just stops being president. Any orders he tried to give after the inauguration would simply be the rambling of a private citizen and would be treated as such. Short of him trying to do a sit in at the Oval Office there's nothing he could do.

The presidency isn't something you step down from, it's a full of pumpkin carriage, at the stroke of midnight (well not midnight, but you know) Obama will turn back into a private citizen.

[up][up][up][up]Also true. If Obama refused to step down the military would already have to be in his pocket otherwise his commands would have no authority.

[up][up] I know, I just think it's so insane. These people are apparently totally unaware about how they sound. "All life is sacred and must be protected...until it's born, then who cares." The baby could die at 2 years old because the parents couldn't afford the hospital, but "it's their fault for being poor."

But it's their fault for being poor - and that's why the most loathsome practice of Modern-day Christianity has to be the Prosperity Doctrine. "Oh, you're poor? Well then that's God's way of punishing you for not being devout enough."

RE: Obama "extended Presidency", keep in mind that those on the left were a little paranoid about Bush pulling that because of a bust he was given that had "2001 - 20xx" on it, as "200x" would have been the more appropriate one for his term in office.

RE: "Ransom" to Iran - honestly, it's kind of true, but not in the way the Republicans are making it out to be. The $400 million was scheduled to be paid, but I'm sure that it was also meant as a "Hey, see, we're cooperating with you - so how about you do us a favor and cooperate too?"

It's been a recurring joke for a while that pro-lifers don't give a shit what happens to the kid once it's been born. Just so long as the mother isn't allowed to get an abortion.

More Green Party bull.

Every time Jill Stein opens her mouth, all I can think about is the fact that she's polling 3% behind Harambe, a dead gorilla.

If people vote based on who they trust with nukes they should also vote on who they are most comfortable being spied on by.

Still Hillary. Clinton and Trump both might go through people's metadata, phone records, etc. but I trust Hillary to do it while wearing pants.

Trump Urges Military To Remove Obama If He Refuses to Leave in 2017

I like the part where his statement is based on a conspiracy theory that Obama plans to steal a third term in office; a theory stolen from an extreme-right activist who once accused Obama of misappropriating federal funds to build a Death Star.

The military and the secret service, otherwise the secret service would just put him in a car, drive him out the gate and not let him back in.

Also this. I don't think Trump's ever been in a position to be manhandled by security or to know anyone who has been in that position, so I think he's legitimately so entitled that he doesn't even understand the fact that people can make you leave.

He lives in a world where nobody's allowed to touch you without invitation.

EDIT: Also, this might just be because of how racist his campaign has been thus far, but am I the only one who thinks Trump is expecting "the military to make him leave" as something like the police shootings that have been going around? I think he just really likes the idea of ringing in his first night in the White House by having someone shoot the black guy that used to live there.

[up][up]It's not really hypocritical. If they were proposing allowing parents to euthanize their born children (but not get abortions), that'd be hypocritical.

[up]It IS hypocritical if they do not offer some monetary way for the parents to take care of the child they aren't letting the parents terminate due to infection by Zika.

Not a fan of abortion at all, but this is among the cases were it needs to be allowed for the sake of mercy.
