Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

John Kasich has confirmed that Donald Trump's son contacted an aide of his to ask Kasich to be Vice President. He also confirms the rumors that he was promised a chance to be the most powerful VP on history.
Including, again, things with no relation to his original stated mission, and your claim goes against what he's claimed at various points.
And why, exactly, am I taking Snowden's word for anything? Mr. "I was totally spying on people for the NSA and I could totally have hacked the President honest."
I'm not denying that Snowden has problems or that he's made a bunch of mistakes, but I think it's unfair to him to act as if he's been as iresponsible and malicious as Wikileaks have been.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranEh. The EU has the right to determine for itself who it will and won't offer asylum to - this vote was about EU member states, not the US. It was part of a wider assessment by the EU of how the Commission and the EU member states deal with electronic mass surveillance of EU citizens, both within the EU and with regards to transfer of personal data of EU citizens to 'third countries' (non-EU countries such as the US).
The main issue was that the US does not give personal data (of EU citizens) the level of protection required by the EU, so the EU ruled that the US Safe Harbour scheme between the EU and the US was invalid (the Commission needed to report on alternatives to Safe Harbour by the end of 2015). The knock-on effect from this and other associated assessments (including the recommendation to terminate the Terrorist Finance Tracking Programme that was agreed between the EU and US) was that EU member states who have charges against Snowdon are advised to drop their charges and commit to EU asylum.
The international press, however, was only interested in the Snowdon part in isolation from everything else the EU was assessing.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. Is the tweet, or Hannity's reaction, still around to see?
Is this it?

I'd argue Megyn Kelly has become second to O'Reilly in the last year or so, but Hannity is up there, and he makes Bill seem like a reasonable moderate by comparison.
The twitter of the guy who went after Hannity: https://twitter.com/StephensWSJ
(scroll a tad to see his remarks). Hannity tweets too much (and too vitriolically) for me to bother searching for his response, but articles have posted the tweet, basically its him saying if Hil wins, it will be because of assholes like him (Stephens).

Yes, thats it.

Comedic value aside, there is something in Hannity's ranting. If Clinton wins the election, the Republicans aren't going to do any soul searching about what they did wrong and how to fix it like they did after Romney - admittedly, they ultimately ignored their own studies and plan, but it was a start. The Tea Party and Trumpettes will blame the Moderate/Establishment Republicans for not supporting Trump and double down on their ideology.
Ask any Tea Party types what Establishment candidates McCain and Romney did wrong and the near universal response is that they weren't conservative enough. Now that they're getting their turn, they sure aren't going to take the blame if they lose.
@Handle in the military thread:
It has a lot to do with the excessive way the government clamps down on it - see the other wiki

Oh, yeah. I remember that from John Oliver. If I remember right, didn't Trump try to get Kasich as VP by offering him control of "domestic and foreign policy" with Trump focusing on "making America great" with implied control over space policy.
That's just...where do I begin? Where the hell do I even begin?

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.
Or at least trying to give that impression in order to get the support of the GOP establishment and lull them into thinking they'll be able to control him. Kaisich at least seems to remember how well that worked with Adolf Hitler. (and Joseph Stalin, and Mussolini IIRC, and far to many dictators and usurpers to count over the course of history).

It's funny but in a "Point and laugh but should we really be doing this" way. I mean...how does that even work?
Is Kasich supposed to be in control of the government? Is Trump supposed to be king with Kasich as Prime Minister? Is Kasich supposed to hold control of almost every cabinet position? Is he supposed to replace the cabinet with his own dudes?
Just how is the process supposed to go? What the absolute hell does "making America great" mean? What is he supposed to be doing?
Just...this is baffling. Allow me to use a certain Futurerama meme by a certain green alien: GOVERNMENT DOES NOT WORK LIKE THAT!
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. It seems pretty simple to me. Trump wants the glory of leadership without any of the hard work. Basically, he thought he'd just nominate the least controversial of his competitors to deal with the everyday hardship of leading one of the world's biggest nations, while giving himself free reign to focus on a couple of vanity projects.

Considering the world now, wouldn't that be a much more merciful death?
Clinton's convention surge is showing no signs of fading.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Just looked at CNN a couple of seconds ago. Apparently Trump's focusing on leaving GOP-affiliated voters in North Carolina. Anybody got any more info to offer about that? Think it will go well?
Actually, how did North Carolina go in the last election?

Silas: I don't know why you say Snowden worked with journalists to vet things. He didn't. He stole a bunch of documents and sent them to journalists to vet for him, without being able to read and understand what he took.
Given he's been caught in a lie more than once on his vetting claims, can we stop repeating it?
