The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]They don't. Heck, as far as I've seen none of these proposed attacks on Sanders ever actually occurred. Was the DNC biased? Yes. Is this an issue? Yes. Did it change anything? Based on what we know the answer is a flat no. Taking this into account I think removing the people responsible is the only action that needs to be taken.

The Green Party Convention: Now with extra Julian Assange livestreaming.

Is this the sort of person they really want to throw their lot in with?

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

I'm not mad at them playing favorites. I'm mad at them courting prejudices. That is exactly the mindset behind the Southern Strategy.

I really don't see why the minimum age is an issue. I can't picture too many candidates under 35 that would be suitable for the job. Have we ever elected a President under 40 anyway?

EDIT: Had originally responded to the wrong poster here.

@Medinioc

You've really got to stop with the conspiracy theories. Sweden's a neutral nation. They're not conspiring with US intelligence against Assange. Also, you know how we're not supposed to doubt the claims of sexual assault victims, no matter who the alleged assaulter is? Way to doubt their claims because of who the alleged assaulter is.

You're conflating me with someone else - I never even mentioned Assange's sexual assault (I even went back 3 pages to when I first linked to that tabloid just to double-check), and I resent the insult.

Also, I shifted from "conspiracy theory" to citing historical precedent where the US has given arms (overtly or covertly) to allies in an Enemy Mine situation only to have the whole thing blow up (no pun intended) later on - and clarified that in cases of covert aid, the State department would have little-to-no involvement in such deals, rendering the accusation against Clinton moot.

I am late to the party but I also would like to remind that Mitt Romney got a lot of flak for being a Mormon.

If I recall, you can buy them, it's just illegal to wear them and claim you were awarded them for tangible gain (happens rather often where I live since almost every business in NC seems to offer veteran discounts). The whole stolen valor act has been in and out of the courts a few times over the freedom of expression vs fraud debate.

Sometimes I wish the DNC would've just used their power to elect Clinton as the Nominee from the get go instead of going through the motions of a primary.

Fuck. All this "rigged" talk is annoying.

The problem is that it makes people disenchanted/jaded with the process in general, as it feels like their opinion didn't matter for squat because of the party bosses, not because of other voters. Like I said before, the entire situation almost reads like Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat - if Clinton had won 100% clean with no irregularities, we wouldn't be having this discussion, even with a few die-hard "Bernie or Bust" types. But since there were irregularities (2 NYC officials from both parties lost their jobs over what happened in Brooklyn), and the emails reinforce that the DNC was playing favorites while being hush-hush about it...

It would have stopped delusions of grandeur of him being the "real" winner. The parties are not obligated to be democratic in and of themselves, as they are private organizations.
