Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Oh man, and this is happening right after the GOP tried to resurrect the Birther conspiracy. Irony's a bitch.

Don't be so sure. 14 hardline GOP incumbents just lost their primary bids in Kentucky.

They'll just call it a sour-grapes attempt to turn the tables, immune to the irony.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Trump has serial mail-order wives, "family values" GOP voters don't give a flying fuck. Typical, really. It should have been obvious with Gingrich.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Is there any news about Louisiana or anything the candidates are saying about Louisiana or future policies that would impact Louisiana?
I'm from Louisiana, if you can't tell.

I know from the electoral maps that its still very deep Red. That's about it. My knowledge of state level American politics (beyond which GOP Governor is being an asshole this month) is pretty thin though.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. What big sites are covering the senate races in detail? 538 isn't yet (I'm hoping that it will at some point), it'd be nice to see some polling averages and predictions.

In other news, the Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City will be closing after Labor Day. Its current owner, Carl Icahn, decided that he can no longer support a business that's losing millions of dollars every month.

To explain for those who lack knowledge of American Football, The placekicker is the person on the team who kicks field goals, which is generally easy points if it is a placekick. Shanking is when the kicked ball goes in an unintended direction, usually costing the placekicker's team those points. Basically, it is saying that Clinton has easy wins that keep on being screwed up for her while Trump continues to decimate any chance he might have of winning.

Competition from the casinos popping up at various other locations across Pennsylvania and New Jersey, for one thing.
I do not get these "shanked kick" metaphors with respect to Hillary. She hasn't always been the most charismatic politician, but she's been entirely competent at her various jobs.

I will be more than happy to see the Republican vote split between Johnson, Clinton, and Trump or his replacement. It makes it almost certain that we'll not only get a Democratic President but also Congress and many state governments. Whether we'll keep them in 2020 is a separate matter.
