The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Donald Trump's Business Failures, Explained

But just like with casinos, Trump was in a business he knew nothing about. Customers on a one-hour flight from Washington to New York didn’t want luxury; they wanted reliability and competitive prices.

Trump Shuttle never turned a profit. But it didn’t have much of a chance; even as he was preening about his successes, Trump’s businesses were falling apart and would soon bring the shuttle crashing down with them.

Donald Trump looks like he expects to coast by on personality alone, and that just doesn't do it. Personality can get a lot of dumbasses to trust you, but it doesn't replace business sense. This idiot could never run the country.

It's a fascinating read if anyone's up for it.

ironballs: "Republicans screwed Republicans"?

Republicans are screwing other Republicans in other politicals arenas as well. Moderate Republicans defeat Tea Party in 14 Kansas legislature primaries.

Kansas being the state whose governor has been enacting Tea Party legislation after legislation, which has cut countless services for all it's citizens and sent the state into spiraling debt. anti-Tea Party contenders won nominations for open seats in another seven races.

Short version: Donald Trump has attempted to coast through his entire professional career on personal charisma alone, never quite understanding that there's a reason the most effective classes consider CHA to be a dump stat.

And since he's not willing to put in the effort to become a Sorcerer, he's left trying to be a party leader despite only being qualified to be the Bard.

You can't change classes? That explains why Trump is incapable of becoming anything remotely "Presidential."

Generally, to be able to change classes, you either need the base stats...or you get offered a cheat by a sentient elemental crystal, which Earth appears rather short on right now.

That class in particular requires having supernatural ancestry or magical influence in your bloodline. Trump is too racially pure for that.

Found a cool op ed that dismisses the idea that Trump is throwing the election. His missteps are just Trump being Trump.

Would all presidents have to be Sorcerers? I can see that for Adams through Madison, Wilson, FDR and Obama, but what about Washington, Lincoln, and Teddy?

So heard this from a customer, and was surprised that reputable news sites are covering the idea of "What if Trump drops out?"

I've heard some people claiming Trump has a grudge against the GOP from well before this election. Who wants to bet he's going to claim he meant to destroy the party when he inevitably loses?

[up][up] It's not impossible. If Trump sinks the party's reputation enough, it'll become suicide to be linked to him in the general election. In that event, they might try to get him to drop out and run with someone less controversial, even if it costs them the White House. There are already some rumors of another "intervention" in the works, and GOP officials have begun trying to figure out an "exit strategy".

[up][up] I imagine most of the GOP voters would end up rallying behind the Libertarians. Which would be game over for the GOP.

Not "most". Libertarianism is a fringe position no matter how much your Facebook friends might try to convince you otherwise. It should be a fringe position because it's fundamentally loony.

[up][up] I'm not sure when this latest one is planned for; it could be going on today.

And if Trump's base stays home, the GOP loses big time in the down ticket races.

@Fighteer: They're not going to leave their ballot blank, and if the GOP can't produce a candidate they certainly aren't going to vote for Clinton.

[up][up] It is, but of the people who actually do go out and vote for the GOP, those are some incredibly dependable voters, and I can't imagine them not coming out to vote.

Many of them will choose Clinton. Some may choose Johnson. But, frankly, the white nationalists who came out to choose Trump don't have another option.

[up][up]The majority of the diehard GOP voters apparently don't actually care about conservative economic policies, as is evident by the fact that Trump was nominated. A Libertarian candidate wouldn't appeal to them in the slightest, and they might even consider it a betrayal of their values.

CaptainCapsase from Orbiting Sagittarius A* Since: Jan, 2015

[up] The people who do though will almost certainly go the libertarians unless Clinton moves quite a bit to the right.

It should also be noted that, at this point, Trump is slated to lose by a similar margin to Romney, so I don't expect him to go away any time soon.
