The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Now-cast on 538, which of their 3 models places the most value on very recent polls, is currently showing Trump with an 8.3% chance of winning and Clinton within a hair's width of taking Georgia and Arizona.

To put Trump's rapid collapse of support into context, this time last week the Now-cast model had Trump with a better than 50/50 chance of winning.

I pray every day that Trump continues to lack the minimal self awareness necessary to stop him from sabotaging himself.

At this point, if things look dire enough, the Republican establishment may actively attempt to force Trump to renounce his candidacy and let them put someone else in. I wonder if there is any set of circumstances that would cause him to accept it, though. All of the furor against him has thus far only made him dig his heels in harder.

In "peopel frequently get this wrong" questions, is it the governor's job to decide on who gets funding? Mostentimes such decisions belong to the legislature, and the Missouri governor has only limited veto authority if memory serves.

He starts the letter by mentioning a bill that was intended to provide case relief to the overburdened system which was passed through the Missouri senate but then vetoed by Governor Nixon.

Then he starts in on the repeated budget cuts.

Because he's an attorney, he even goes so far as to cite a motive, so that the case is clear beyond a shadow of a doubt for any peers that might be reading: overburdening the public defenders' office makes it harder for black youths to find justice by making it so that there just aren't enough defenders to go around.

It's very thorough.

The condition of public defenders' offices in many states is absolutely deplorable.

[up][up][up] I think we need to wait closer to or after the election, but it is looking like Trump's comments against the Khan's are his "47%."

First he came for the Mexicans. And the GOP did not speak out, because they were not Mexicans.

Then he came for the Muslims. And the GOP did not speak out, because they were not Muslims.

Now, he's come for the military families. And the GOP is like, "Whoa man, what the f*ck?!"

Who would the Republicans get to run in place of Trump, though? At this point it would seem like anyone else would have even longer odds against Clinton, especially as it'd obviously expose party dysfunction (I'm reminded of the presidential elections in Taiwan earlier this year).

That is the question, yes. Some have suggested Mike Pence, who's already accepted the VP nomination and is therefore on the official ticket.

Is there any precedent for a major party dropping their candidate in the middle of the campaign?

Not AFAIK in the US. I pointed to Taiwan because the KMT actually did that (they still got crushed, though that probably said more of the incumbent's unpopularity).

Fighteer: Pence wasn't even in the primary though. You'd think they'd want someone with more name recognition. If Hillary dropped out I'd expect Bernie to get the nomination over Kaine.

Not sure, but I think there is precedent for an unopposed Presidential Election.

If Trump does implode, I think Gary Johnson has an excellent chance of breaking the 15% threshold.

Gary Johnson, who wants to privatize our police force and prisons? I never want to see him win either. I hope Trump doesn't implode too much yet.

Didn't say that was a good thing. I'd rather not have fringers like Johnson and Stein given bigger platforms to spread their garbage.

Johnson and Stein have fundamentally limited appeal regardless of what the major parties are doing. You simply won't get enough Republican die-hards to agree with military isolationism, drug liberalization, etc.; and you'll never get Democrats to agree to remove most or all regulatory controls on business.
