Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Ogodei: You'd be surprised. A significant chunk of big business types from Wall Street to Silicon Valleynote are actually getting on board with things like a strong minimum wage and bank regulation, and not even out of fear of the Torches and Pitchforks this time. More like "the slow recoveries and economic chaos from the recession aren't good for business, and healthy regulations actually mean healthier businesses."
The Wall Street and Silicon valley types are getting on board with minimum wage increases largely because they do not employ a particularly large number of minimum wage employees, and thus are largely unaffected by it. In regards to areas of the economy where they stand to benefit from deregulation or captured regulation, they're every bit as regressive as big oil tends to be about the environment.

Another thing is that Big Business don't want competition, so they try to increase regulations in order to protect their monopolies. They can afford to lose money, but smaller competitors can't. So, they kick down the ladder, so to speak.

No, I'm sure some Big Businesses will try to find a way around any minimum wage laws like that by using Franchises or "independent contractors" — it already happens in industries such as fast food and with the likes of Uber.

Keep Rolling OnThey probably think it will invalidate his endorsement of Hillary and repeated attacks against Trump.
And possibly Obamacare.
Basically, it helps the "America is a shithole that's been ruined and you should be afraid of how bad it's become!" narrative if they can convince people that the President for the last eight years has been a foreign national deliberately destabilizing us in preparation for the inevitable overthrow that only Trump can prevent.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. While the day to day stuff is mostly useless, 538 has Clinton's chances up to 73%.

Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff. It's what appears to be a news person interviewing a member of Trump's campaign/the Republican establishment and asking if Trump's favourable comments about Ryan's challenger could backfire. The guy being interviewed simply says nothing and acts like he can't hear the question, then say "I lost you there for a sec, I can hear you now" before being asked the question again and again acting as if he heard nothing.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranA Fox News poll has Clinton with a 10 point lead over Trump, mostly due to Johnson getting 12%. While this is probably an outlier its still pretty crazy.

Even Fox News has to acknowledge that Clinton has a lead?
Actually, how has Fox News been treating Trump and responding to his current madness?
Odds for a Trump win are looking slimmer.
From a numbers standing Clinton's gotten a much bigger bump than Trump has following the party conventions. She's also been consistently ahead of Trump even when he was close if I'm not mistaken.
From a social standpoint, Trump keeps shooting himself in the foot then shoving said foot in his mouth in an attempt to stop the bleeding. Most recently he made disparaging comments about the Muslim mother of a Muslim soldier who died in the line of duty after her husband gave an impassioned speech at the Democratic convention denouncing Trump. That seems to be hitting a bit harder than past missteps have. That lead of Clinton's has since skyrocketed to about 75% going by an earlier posted 538 poll.
Finally, his antics are driving away prominent republicans who should be firmly in his side as they either step away from the mess or even promise to support Clinton. His own VP pick went against him in supporting Paul Ryan in his reelection primary.

I wonder what Trump would have said if he was handed a Prisoner of War medal instead of a Purple Heart?
