Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Brexit: If one assumes the EU's undemocratic elements are beyond fixing, there's a case for withdrawing from the EU beyond simple xenophobia. It's not a very compelling case given the alternative is likely to be even more harmful to democracy, but it's not as black and white as people would like to imagine. Though I suppose it never is.
But that's not how it was presented to us. It was all "we need to leave so we can shut the borders to keep out terrorists" and "the EU is evil because bits of the bureaucracy get to make laws that affect us without our say-so" without ever providing examples of that.
And outright lies about how much it cost us. And a dismissal of any expert who didn't blindly agree as a scaremonger.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Trump says US should accept Crimea on Russia:

Generally speaking, the Republicans prefer someone like Putin because he's a stubborn leader who doesn't take shit from those gosh darn immigrants and Muslims. Which is also why they think Trump will be the best option for America.
Just want to put this out their before someone else does:
Is it just me, or is Trump experiencing the wrath of Khan?

This is the kind of petty shit that concerns me on multiple levels.
For one, his event sold too many tickets, so people were kept out of the venue for safety reasons. Trump manages takes this personally, or at the very least, perfectly willing to sell it that way to his supporters. Though I wouldn't be surprised if he genuinely believes it too, since it's consistent with... everything else he's ever done.
And it's not hard to picture his thought process that "occupancy limits are bogus!" But is it a bad omen when you can extrapolate that attitude to the Geneva Convention. For a "law and order candidate," he's not much a "rules are rules" guy when they get in his way.

He's not about law and order, he's about punishment and retribution. His future is a boot stamping on a human face, forever.
Actually, Trump might be the most Orwellian candidate in a very long time, and he hits all main points. He's textbook.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.![]()
What's his stance on privacy? I don't think I've heard it. I ask because to me that's an important part of an Orwellian nightmare (as opposed to other generic dystopias).
Trump's mind does seem suspiciously similar to how I'd expect an inner party member to act (though, to be fair, I haven't actually read 1984). He doesn't seem to think that the truth exists and also seems to view power as an end in itself.
Leviticus 19:34Trump is so woefully ignorant, somebody should send him videos of those old Saturday morning "Schoolhouse Rock" cartoons. [1]
Maybe then he'd learn something about American values, the Constitution, and the how the US government works.
Trump doesn't read. He gets all his info from watching TV. Because it comes in small, easily-digestible sound bites that his short attention span can cope with.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.@ Putin. On one level they admire him as an enemy with skill. I admit I had a bit of this. Mind you it's not "we want Putin to take over Ukraine", it's glaring over at Obama like a disproving parent and being "why can't you be more like that." It really doesn't help that his life story, spy comes to Presidency and defends nation from enemies, bears some similarities to the later Jack Ryan books.
That said I think, for some, what he and the Chinese stand for resonates deeply. They claim they oppose globalism. They wax and wain about how "unique cultures should not be subservient to the Western Liberal model." Than Conservatives look over here and see our "unique culture" being "destroyed by the Western Liberal model", and they think they've found themselves a champion.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.![]()

It makes sense when you think about it. He's not the President we our generation needs right now, but he is the one it deserves.

@The Handle
No she's not. The Brexit was motivated by xenophobia more than anything else and to praise it as any sort of victory for the working class is to reveal just how out of touch with reality she is.
