Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The last candidate to win the Presidency without winning Ohio was Kennedy in 1960. And in the case of the Republican Party, Trump winning the Presidency without winning Ohio would be entirely unprecedented.
Which more or less means that, excluding some rather implausible scenarios, if Trump can't win Ohio, he can't win.
You remember the pocket copy of the Constitution Khizr Khan showed off at the DNC to mock Trump with? It was in Amazon's Top 10 best selling books earlier this afternoon.
I know it's still too early, but Nate Silver now projects that Trump has a higher chance of winning the election, including Ohio and Florida. Even if he doesn't get Pennsylvania and he loses, Trump needs to lose big in order to ensure his fascist supporters crawl away in shame.
That's right, boys. Mondo cool.![]()
The polls-plus prediction has Trump losing in a landslide, but that metric hasn't been particularly reliable compared to a purely polls based metrics. Wikileaks at least claims to have more material to release on Clinton specifically, and if that's the case we'll likely see it drop closer to the election for maximum effect. Jesus Christ, it's actually happening, isn't it?
He's close to the tipping point, but not close enough for them to flip; part of that is the demographic situation, which is getting worse and worse for the GOP as time goes on.

Gerrymandering is the only reason the PA state house is as disproportionately Republican as it is. Same case with our representation in Federal Congress really, where we voted handily for Obama but sent 12 Republicans for 17 representatives.
The state does have strongly Republican areas, of course, but they only have their statewide control by ghettoizing the populations of Philadelphia and, to a lesser extent, Pittsburgh, without whom PA would be West Virginia.
I know this question isn't exactly on-topic, but I have this to ask: Were childhood obesity rates in the US starting from 2005 that large to the point the government noticed and had broadcasting companies make episodes for certain shows contain weighty aesops? Examples:
1. The Fairly Oddparents episode "Just Desserts!" (February 16, 2005)
2. The Simpsons episode "The Heartbroke Kid" (May 1, 2005)
3. The Kim Possible episode "Grande Size Me" (March 3, 2007)

Looks like the Kochs have ditched Trump to focus on the Senate races
. (TRIGGER WARNING: FOX NEWS)
When Charles Koch addressed hundreds of the nation's most powerful polical donors at a weekend retreat in Colorado Springs Saturday, he lamented the choice in the race for the Oval Office between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump.
"We don't really, in some cases, don't really have good options," Koch said in describing the "current political situation."
Mark Holden, general counsel and senior vice president of Koch Industries, told the Associated Press that the Koch network won't spend anything to help Trump directly in 2016, even though it may evoke Clinton in attacks on Democratic congressional candidates.
None of the presidential candidates are aligned with the Koch network "from a values, and beliefs and policy perspective," Holden said, citing other determining factors such as "running a good campaign" and talking about key issues "in a positive productive way." "Based on that, we're focused on the Senate," Holden said, noting that the Koch network has devoted around $42 million so far to television and digital advertising to benefit Republican Senate candidates.

Si Vis Pacem, Para Perkele@Fox: That's not something I expected.
I'm not sure if it properly explains why people watch Fox, though. Having been forced to listen to Fox news for about a week straight (my Grandpa watches it all the time-it's like white noise to him. It was...an agonizing experience, and that's coming from a conservative) what I figure: with most news media, their primary strategy is to invoke You Can Panic Now because that draws in viewers (I call this "Dystopia Scam"-they prop themselves up as La Résistance to the imagined evil establishment. Think of it as being a toned down conspiracy theory). Fox News uses a customized form of Dystopia Scam that specifically targets conservatives.
So, people watch Fox News because they've bought into the Dystopia Scam and want to feel smarter than the sheeple who watch other news media.
Leviticus 19:34So Mark Cuban endorsed Hillary Clinton at a campaign event. And event in which he also accused Trump of having gone "batshit crazy" and being "a jag-off". He also opened the speech by addressing him in Russian
.
It would take a lot. Literally every single elected official in the country was voted in using the current voting methods, so it will take something unimaginable for them to say "You know what? The method that got me into office isn't really that great. Let's change it."
Besides, most voters don't really understand alternative voting methods anyway.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff. If you follow Major League Baseball seriously, you ought to have some knowledge of at least one other system, since the end of season awards like league MVP and Cy Young are determined by a positional voting system. (The tiny Pacific nation of Nauru is the only country in the world that uses this voting system for their elections.) Obviously, not everyone is a baseball fan, but theoretically quite a few people have been exposed to an alternate system that way.
And positional voting isn't that different from ranked choice, so...
