The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]There are no more safety risks with Pokemon Go than there are with walking outside while being an idiot. If you step in front of a bus because you're too busy trying to catch pokemon on your phone, that's no different than stepping in front of a bus because you were texting someone. The backlash against Pokemon Go is a prime example of New Media Are Evil.

While Hillary might not be an antivaxer, she's been courting the alt-med crowd as much as Bernie has. Something that in this particular election every candidate is getting behind, unfortunately. :(

Okay, so what you're saying is that they're just ignorant enough to think that not vaccinating their kids won't put them at risk for illnesses that can kill them? It's still pretty bad, but I guess if they're not actively being malicious... My guard has just been raised by organizations like Autism Speaks who believe that autism 'takes their kids away.' Plus there's obviously the whole "no actual scientific evidence supporting a link," part.

In fact, that's the entire reason we vaccinate in the first place. To prevent kids from getting preventable illnesses. Does getting the flu shot mean you don't think people with the flu have lives worth living?
No, and I fail to see how that's comparable. Autism will not kill you or others, but the flu can. My grandmother has a compromised immune system and I have to get the flu shot so that I do not inadvertently get her sick with an illness that can kill her. I have a problem with the anti-vaccination crowd when they don't apply that same logic to the protection of other people's lives.

Edit: plus, if she supported vaccinations, why does her platform say she'll let parents avoid giving them to their kids?
It doesn't look like it's in the Green Party platform specifically. She's said in the past essentially that "I understand why people may be suspicious when regulatory agencies often have corporate ties," probably in an attempt to court the anti-vaccination crowd.

[up][up]Her "personal health adviser" is Mark Hyman, a Huff Po writer, antivaxer, and homeopath snake oil salesman who's raked in millions off of books and phony cures. While she hasn't been as vocal as Bernie the alt-med crowd has taken his employment as an open endorsement. They're expecting an extension of Bill Clinton's policies, considering his hand in empowering them through the CAM commission and his support of Tom Harkin's lunacy. Very recently the alt-med crowd has has encroached into the VA hospitals, where alongside actual treatments veterans are now being offered their "alternatives".

I do pray I'm reading too much into it, all things considered. Over my lifetime I've seen Alt-med's influence here in rural Appalachia devastate the health of the poorest and most vulnerable residents.

Anti-vaxxers don't care about the scientific evidence. It's not a position that's built on a scientific foundation. It's built on a foundation of snappy sound-bites and arguments that "seem reasonable enough" when they come out of celebrities' mouths.

You can wank science at them all you want, but all they hear is "blah blah I'm brainwashed by the system blah blah."

Re: Pokémon Go — there have been a few instances of people trespassing on private property, entering restricted areas, etc., just to catch a Pokémon. That's really no worse than falling into an open manhole because you were oblivious to your surroundings while texting. But we really don't need more potential candidates for the Darwin Awards.

I fully agree that it's New Media Are Evil. I remember when the new moral threat to our survival as a species was MMOs because some people were getting so addicted that they stopped going to school or taking care of their babies.

I also remember when the new moral threat was Pokemon, which makes it darkly amusing to see that come back around.

To get this back on an on-topic direction, what possible splinter polities are plausible if a Divided States of America scenario were to happen within the near future? Assume for the sake of convenience that the timeline includes events in past years/decades that have exacerbated secessionist sentiments in the USA to sufficient levels, and that an appropiate "trigger event" would serve as the camel's back-breaking straw that sets off a Second American Civil War.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.

Yeah, it's definitely the "it's popular and I don't get it, therefore it must be a threat to society" effect. Like people who who spend hours watching TV a week, but consider videogames (that you actually have to interact with and engage your brain playing) a danger to children's childhoods.

Anti-vaxxers don't care about the scientific evidence. It's not a position that's built on a scientific foundation. Yeah, you would think I would accept that after years of dealing with climate change denial/'evolution doesn't exist' types (including two of my own science teachers - somehow). I know of one or two who have changed their minds about vaccinations, but I honestly think the best way to deal with it would just be to legislate it. And definitely provide support to low-income families who have any difficulties getting their kids in to a doctor for vaccinations, because I've been told that's also a problem in the US.

[up] Surely things won't get that bad, will they?

[up][up] In response before Figtheer hits us with the "Off-Topic" thump-basically, what happened in The Falcon Cannot Hear. That is, Clinton wins the Presidential nomination...and then gets assassinated. Kaine is instead sworn in but lacks the ability to get the nation behind him, so in four years, another Democrat tries to pick up the pieces. By then, though, the nation is a powder keg just waiting to be lit.

EDIT: I do not want this to actually happen, so save your "Please don't talk about people getting assassinated!" BS.

Has Trump ever been nice to Hillary in this campaign?

Or does "no longer nice" mean that he'll sink to rape threats and the like, in terms of discourse?

[up][up]So basically saying the same thing some of the left-wing nuts were saying in the comments of that Slate article I posted. "She's not talking and we know why". After all there can't be any reason beyond her husband being a misogynist, right. Nice to see horseshoe theory in full effect.

For the record, an interview in which she talks.

[up][up]I think it means moving from calling her a weak crooked insider into [[Abomination Accusation Attack accusations]] of paedophilia, substance abuse, and being fat, ugly, and old. Also of being a cuck.

Also on Friday, Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, who does indeed follow Donald Trump on Twitter, said that politics is no place for name-calling. (He was referring to President Obama implying that Trump is a demagogue and not, of course, to his running mate, Donald Trump.)

[lol]

[up]I'll be honest here, her backgroundish behaviour in the convention speech left me uncomfortable ("Ugh, another demure Muslim woman letting the man do the talking. Does she usually stay three metres behind her husband, too?") I'm genuinely happy that I was wrong, and terribly sorry as to the actual reason she was quiet at the con.

Also, I'm rather shocked at the sheer magnitude of Trump's assness.

Trump takes any criticism levelled at him as a personal insult, and can help but insult them "back". It's just his over-inflated ego.

Besides it's not like the Republicans let their wives talk much. Hell when Trump's wife gave a speech they just had her rip off Michele Obama.

[up][up][up]When you think about it though, given the Republican Party's traditional mascot, it's not really that much of a shock. Trump is just taking the Party's symbol and doing his best to live up to it, something which few Republicans have done as well as Trump.tongue
