Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I understood it to mean that the 40 states got 0.5% between them, which is 0.0125% each.
That's fucking miserable.
And I don't care about illegal or dishonest, I care about the future of the USA. Fat lot of good a President will do if Congress is against them. There's no reason we won't get a four-person Supreme Court at this rate.
I thought that was common knowledge and one of the stated motivations behind the 9/11 attacks?

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
No, Julep was right - it was 0.5% for each State. It was late and I was very tired.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"A tweet from Jill Stein:

Yeah, couple things with that. First, the only reason Thalidomide wasn't a big problem in the US is due to one FDA employee being an Obstructive Bureaucrat who didn't trust the various studies the drug company had conducted. Second, the FDA isn't so much controlled by the pharmaceutical industry as it is getting its hands tied by Congress (who owes a lot to the pharmaceutical lobby).

Where does it say so on the platform
? I can't find anything about vaccines on it. Also, a lot of anti-science stuff has also been recently removed from the platform while she was the Green Party leader, for instance their past pro-homeopathy
stance. Likely her being somewhat vague on the issue is in order to not lose support of past voters (or the party itself), I doubt that she would actually try to enact anti-vaccine legislation if she would become president in some hypothetical world.
Then again, you could argue that she should state more strongly, without qualifications, that she supports mandatory vaccinations, since legitimizing distrust against them is a danger for public health - I certainly wouldn't disagree with that.
Seriously? Now the Clintons are responsible for the racism of the GOP? I guess it can't possibly have anything to do with the fact that the Republicans adopted the Southern Strategy 40 some years ago.
The article writer also points out the idiocy in wanting to oppose fascism by openly attacking the candidate that's opposed to fascism.
Stein is a nutjob, pure and simple. Or at the very least she's trying to appeal to nutjobs and is aping their rhetoric accordingly.

Jill Stein article: Well, a comment calling her a sellout to Nazis is certainly not what I was expecting to see today.
The direct comparison of the Republican Party to Nazis is something I'm thinking about, though. Should they lose this election, how much damage to conservative political thought will there be? Despite the spin-heavy nature of politics today, not everyone is Teflon-coated, even if they had nothing to do with Trump, his platform of fear and hate and his base.
Sure, I have no love lost for them, but will the progress they've made be knocked back if they lose be as far as American civil rights will be should they win?

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotI've always found that to be one of the weaker arguments against anti-vaxxing.
Let me preface this by stating that I agree with the sentiment that anti-vaxxing is a ridiculous trend that needs to die. This isn't a "Your side is wrong" argument but a "We need to consider how we present our side" argument. Anti-vaxxers are nuts.
But the logic that anti-vaxxers don't think autistic people have lives worth living is assuming a false premise: that attempting to avoid an illness is, in and of itself, a value judgment of the people who suffer from it.
By the same logic, anyone who tries to avoid getting AIDS hates people with AIDS and thinks anyone with AIDS deserves to die.
By all means, anti-vaxxing is nuts, but when we're attempting to argue the merits of sanity and logic, we should refrain from doing so with talking points rooted in reactionary, emotionally-driven assumptions. Not wanting your kid to have autism does not mean you would love your child any less if s/he did, and suggesting so to a parent will not make them any more inclined to listen to the rest of what you have to say.
In fact, that's the entire reason we vaccinate in the first place. To prevent kids from getting preventable illnesses. Does getting the flu shot mean you don't think people with the flu have lives worth living?
This is hilarious.

AV don't think measles are that dangerous and most lethal diseases have been eradicated and think things like herd immunity are more than enough to prevent them.
Also, they want an explanation for why their children have autism, other than it happens through natural causes, someone to blame for it. They don't accept it is a disorder that happens naturally and genetics play a role in the autism manifestation, since if it were genetics that means the parents carry the genes for the autism manifestation and due to that it would be "their fault" that their children have autism.
It is a movement that stems from ignorance, don't expect rational reasoning with them.
Inter arma enim silent leges
That. Their position isn't, "I want my child to die from measles because it's preferable to autism." It's, "Measles? Really? You want me to be scared of measles?"
General rule when arguing with parents: the moment you call a person's parenting ability into question by saying something like "You would rather let your child die—" you have lost the argument. They are no longer listening to you. You have triggered an emotional response, and thus successfully convinced them to believe that you're an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I also recall reading that herd immunity isn't the only reason for vaccinations - while most children's immune systems may be capable of fighting off those childhood diseases, the child may develop complications from the disease that their immune system may not be able to handle. And then there are those unfortunate enough to not have an immune system able to fight off the basic disease to begin with. Anti-vaxxers aren't gambling with the lives of their own kids (which IMO should already warrant charges of child endangerment), they're doing so for everyone else's. Would that argument - that they would be held responsible if their kid turned out to be the cause of an outbreak that killed others - hold water?

Maybe, but the problem is that I already feel like there's overwhelming evidence that he's not a patriot. For example, his criticism of M Cain as not being a hero was very disgusting and about when I realized that I was never going to vote for this guy.
