The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]The people in that Reddit are not exactly geniuses, alas. The former Sanders' supporter talking about how he's here because he's realized "Bernie's a cuck" and he must fight "$hillary" is particularly special.

In one sense I'm grateful for the "$hillary" meme. If only because anybody dumb enough to use it instantly proves that there is no point in ever speaking to them again.

[up]Or just a particularly stupid Sanders supporter. They do exist. They're not common, but they're not fictional either.

@Trump leaking classified intel: I really wish we could use this line of attack but I'm afraid the email thing might have poisoned the well. If Hillary makes a big deal of it they could just call her a hypocrite.

I don't think he leaked anything, I just think he's ignorantly spouting off things he knows nothing of. There's nothing in there to attack him on that he can't already be attacked on and has so far proved impervious to.

We also have an issue with the government effectively confirming his statements if they try to go after him. If they just leave it be people can brush it off as him not knowing what he's talking about.

@lightysnake: So trying to hold the democrats accountable to their platform and maintain the sense of community the Sanders campaign built is a bad thing? That's by far the most common sentiment among protestors that I know of.

@Ambar: 10+/- 5% or so of voters for a particular candidate are generally voting for them for utterly moronic sounding reasons. There's probably at least one voter whose first choice was Martin O'Malley and whose second choice was Ted Cruz, as illogical as that sounds.

[up][up]They might be able to do that with this one, as there used to be an official base in Saudi Arabia in 2003 and earlier (which might actually be what he was talking about), but if he leaks something really bad, that won't work.

Although Trump on trial for leaking classified information might be funny to see, if only because he would have absolutely no idea how much trouble he's in.

[up][up][up]That comes with the assumption that the people in the party don't already agree with a lot of things on the platform, which really doesn't make any sense.

And your point is? I said there are not especially bright Sanders supporters who are voting for Trump. This is not exactly a refutation of my point.

If Trump does start leaking intel, Clinton can just sit back and let him sink his own campaign.

No, screaming "No TPP" at Elijah Cummings when he talks about BLM and his father? That is not admirable. It is not trying to hold someone accountable. It's being spoiled, selfish brats and there's no other way I'm going to say it. Howling "we trusted you" at Elizabeth Warren like she had a goddamn obligation to endorse Sanders and work against Clinton? People like Ashley Andrea, who is running for office being so unbelievably ignorant as to not even know what Clinton's positions even are, let alone whining about Bernie 'going last' on night one (which is, y'know, an honor).?

Is this representative of all Bernie fans? No, not remotely at all. But don't sit there and tell me that all of these people are operating in good faith, with the constant heckling and screaming from the same few people. Yeah, those are exactly the type of people I referred to.

Ugh, and while we're on the topic of the Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat controversy, some of the leaked emails confirmed earlier suspicions that yes, the Clinton campaign was taking a LOT of money from what were earlier promised to be general campaign funds, to the point that only 0.5% of $82 million went to the States involved, while the remainder (40 States involved x 0.5 = 2, so 98%) went to Clinton's campaign coffers or the DNC itself.

Between the creation of the victory fund in September and the end of last month, the fund had brought in $142 million, the lion’s share of which — 44 percent — has wound up in the coffers of the DNC ($24.4 million) and Hillary for America ($37.6 million), according to a POLITICO analysis of FEC reports filed this month. By comparison, the analysis found that the state parties have kept less than $800,000 of all the cash brought in by the committee — or only 0.56 percent.

The emails, naturally, blame Sanders for putting them "between a Rock and a Hard Place" for forcing "“a fight in the media with the party bosses over big money fundraising.” This is not exactly making me feel better about voting for Hillary this fall, even if I know that it's because the other options are various shades of insane.

Nothing you've just listed is illegal. Or even dishonest. It was joint fundraising with the DNC. Some of it went to Clinton. Some of it went to the DNC. The other fifty-six percent went to other individual candidates.

Agreed, we already knew that the DNC under the now former chairwoman's (whose name I can't remember at the moment) "leadership," intended to focus the money on Clinton's campaign and leave local, state, and Congressional elections out in the cold.

They have been doing a "white house or bust' strat for funds for quite a few years now, which has probably cost them dearly in congress.

[up] It's also something that is monumentally stupid, especially in the environment where the Republican Congress refuse to work with a Democratic President like we had under Barack Obama. And especially now that Donald Trump has redefined what exactly the Republican Party will be forced to aim for in the future.

Now it is even more important to block his orangeness but still.

@ Trump and The Vietnam War — I was just reading about Trump when I noted this:

Trump was not drafted into the Vietnam War, for several reasons: student deferments, a medical deferment, and then a high number in the draft lottery. While in college, he obtained four student deferments. He was deemed fit for service based upon a military medical examination in 1966, and was briefly classified as fit by a local draft board in 1968, but was then medically disqualified later in 1968. Trump has attributed his medical deferment to "heel spurs" in both feet according to a 2015 biography. Selective Service records from the National Archives confirm that Trump received the medical deferment and eventually received a high selective service lottery number in 1969. Trump explained: "I actually got lucky because I had a very high draft number."

Hmm...I wonder if this could be used against him (as him being a "Draft Dodger"), as has been used against other Candidates (and Presidents) in the past?
