Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

His awkwardness seems to have worked for a lot of people. There's running joke going around the Internet about how he's auditioning to be America's Step Dad. I can think of worse memes to be associated with.
Example: "Tim Kaine is the dad your friends called when you got busted at a party, because you knew he'd be disappointed but would come and pick you up anyway."

At which point Trump will promptly use it to frame Clinton as a warmongering imperialist whose foreign policy thinking is stuck in the Cold War.

Trump has no policy positions other than what he believes his audience wants to hear; people really need to face the facts about him; if there's one thing about him which he doesn't oversell, it's his talent for salesmanship. Despite coming off as a complete moron to anyone with a college degree, Trump is, in his own way, a remarkably skilled orator, in that he's managed to bluff his way into a 45:55 shot at the highest office in the country with little to no concrete policy proposals and absolutely no support from the powerful interests that dominate his party.
This is going to be a hard fought election, one way or the other.
I'm almost certain he does, though he would never use it since the lowest common denominator probably doesn't. He's not stupid, or at least not nearly as stupid as he comes across as in his public speeches; linguists, marketing experts, and other people focused on the art of communication have noted there's a very clear method to his madness; it's not nearly as off the cuff as it sounds.

If Trump even knows the word "imperialist" I'd be very surprised.

John Oliver sums up that vision of Kaine pretty well
. "After all the fear, and anger, and division, I needed stepdad to come in and tell me everything was going to be okay."

Fantastic speech. I can't find anything to fault in it, except for a few minor policy quibbles, but the Democratic party is supposed to be a big tent and she hit all the important points.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Likewise: It was fine and said the things that needed saying. She's going to have her work cut out for her in the salesmanship department though.
Re: Trump and Russia: There's no (public) evidence Trump is knowingly collaborating at this time. So anything she could have said along those lines would be unfounded insinuation.

I can't wait to see her debate Trump. She's going to destroy him. She can bring up Mc Cain, the disabled journalist, Russia, Trump University...
He has so many fuckups to bring up.

More on the "citizen's arrest" BS
. Which went nowhere. Hopefully it was just a bad idea being circulated online, and not an actual physical attempt.

And in our eyes, I'm sure she will indeed destroy Trump. Unfortunately, this thread is not even close to representative of the views of the American electorate.
@Elle: She was eviscerated in the eyes of the democratic electorate, since despite the best efforts of the DNC, they voted for him over her.

Surprised Hillary didn't go for the jugular by playing up Trump's ties to Russia. Might be a bit too risky though.
