The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The funny thing is, he'd probably get away with that. I really, truly thought that Trump's campaign would be sunk when he insulted Mc Cain's military career. But alas, I overestimated the decency of the GOP base.

Chelsea's introducing her mom. Man do they ever have the same voice. I wasn't looking at the screen when she first started speaking and I thought it was Hillary.

EDIT: Apparently volunteers are having to block the aisles to stop the more brain-damaged members of the Sanders' delegation from rushing the stage to place Clinton under "citizens arrest." Congratulations, Unicorn Brigaders. You are officially no different from Chris Christie and his "lock her up" chants.

So alongside the claims that the email hacking suggestion was "a joak", Trump claims Putin's a better leader than Obama. At least the F-35 is going places now. Remind me why the fuck is there an equivalence between this guy and Hillary?

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Reason for equivalence between him and Hillary?

Because the news media loves a good close presidential race. And if none exists, they'll try to create one. Which means attacking the winner, or propping up the loser, until they're close.

And Clinton is speaking.

Sanders appeared to be crying in the crowd after Clinton thanked him for all of his support.

Hil must have very strong female genes. She looked nothing like her father and her daughter looks nothing like Bill.

I like her speech so far. Not quite as emotional as the ones from last night, but she's still getting into it. She's also managed to slam Trump and try to unify her supporters and Sanders'.

She's nailing Trump for the "I alone can fix it" line. A shame she can't flatout call him a Mussolini impersonator wearing an orangutan fur wig, but she's getting close.

She's not as charismatic as Obama, but I imagine most people aren't (plus it helps that he has amazing speechwriters). She's doing well enough though.

Yeah. Obama is just really personable when he speaks, while Hillary sounds more like most people do when they give a speech.

[up][up]Not!Obama is hardly a criticism. Sanders wasn't Obama either but I don't remember too many articles criticizing his speaking style. And there aren't near enough articles criticizing Trump as a speaker.

I love this article. Given the microscope that the First Lady and potential First Lady's outfits are put under, I'm glad someone did the same to Bill.

A major Republican Super PAC has gone silent. Just another threat to Trump's cash flow.

I never got why being personable mattered to people. I care more about their ideas than their ability to act friendly.

[up] It's an integral part of being an elected official. You can be the best civil servant the world has ever seen, but if you can't convince the majority of the nation that you're on their side, it won't matter.

I understand why it matters to people, but I do think making such a big deal about it is why it remains as big an issue as it is.

Usually I'm more focused on the words of the speech itself. Most of the time I usually don't register how charismatic speakers are unless they're at either particular extreme. And Kaine, Hillary. Chelsea, they're all in the safe zone. As is Trump, but the words of his speeches are egregiously bad, so there.

FFShinra Since: Jan, 2001

Didn't quite care for Kaine's speech. He seems respectable, don't get me wrong, but all I could think was how awkward he was.

[up]x5 Good for you. Unfortunately, that's not what matters for a lot of folks. Here's a perfect example; the main reason why I was so floored by Obama last night wasn't just because of what he said, but how he said it. He was charismatic, he was personable, and he was awe-inspiring. That is why myself and many others were so in awe of him. With Clinton, she's not as charismatic, she's not as personable, and she's certainly not as awe-inspiring. That's not to say she'd bad, but there's a reason Obama was the Democratic Nominee back in 2008 and not Hilary, and it's because, regardless of their policies, Obama was simply the better salesman.
