The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm not too worried about Stein, minor parties typically poll better than they perform on election night.

The threat to disrupt the campaign or start trying to deregister Democrats is a bit more worrisome.

Maybe they're both thoroughly rotten as people, but regardless of ideology Clinton has shown a long history of political acumen and actual competence at leadership that Trump hasn't. It's false equivalence.

The thing about the media is that they like to make invoke You Can Panic Now. They're either unaware of or don't care about the negative effects this has already had on our culture.

[up] I get that the media needs some negative stories for dramatic effect, but I think they should at least invoke some lighter stories in there too to keep it balanced.

[up][up][up][up][up] "Demexit" is a threat to be Democratic Party, not to Clinton being elected; most independents are de facto members of one party or the other in terms of how they vote.

[up][up][up]I agree, here there's a bit less fear-mongering but most cheery news are things like a lost dog being found or a new medical treatment, and they're always stories at the very end of a news segment. Wish there was a bit more of a balance.

If you don't like fearmongering in your news, I think the key is not to bother with the 24-hour news networks. Stick with your local broadcasts.

I'm still in awe.

Obama dragged Trump with class and dignity, all while being the inspirational role model.

Someone earlier mentioned disdain for the non-violent far left, and it made me chuckle.

I've posted on many different boards in my near 40 years on this rock, and I've always found two things to be universal to them:

1. Newton's Laws aren't just for the physical realm, it seems that they exist in cyberspace as well

2. There is no exception to #1

Yeah, dark matter is like "trolls". You can't really stop it, you can't really know for sure that it is there, but you can usually get enough corollary evidence that you can state with confidence that something like it exists and fucks with everything you're trying to accomplish.

I really wish I could have seen a Trump vs Obama presidential debate. It would be a bloodbath of Mustang vs Envy levels.

[up]It will have to, but Hillary lacks a lot of Obama's eloquence and raw charisma.

President Clinton vs. Trump would also be a sight to see.

Secretary Clinton is a very solid speaker, mechanically she does not have that many flaws. Her biggest issue is that she's just not "Politician Charismatic". She'd be great as a University President, or the Chairman of the Board. Something with a very formal, stilted, delivery being expected. It's the arm's distance speaking style that just can't let you be drawn in, something that both 42 and 44 excel at avoiding.

@DWS News

When Obama agreed to do a DNC fundraiser in Miami in June — and in the end, went out of his way in his public remarks to talk about why Wasserman Schultz needed to be reelected — she for weeks hassled White House political director David Simas to get 10 of the 60 seats (which went for $10,000 each) at the event for her congressional reelection campaign’s biggest donors. She ended up filling the seats, according to people involved with planning the event, with family and friends.
Wow, so she wasn't just a power-hungry sycophant, she was an incompetent one at that.

Yes, DWS has got a number of complaints about incompetence and cronyism. Sanders's own complaints are just another rock on the stack.

I wouldn't say it's the only thing that Sanders and Clinton supporters agree on (since obviously it isn't), but I don't think there's anyone except for DWS herself who regrets her leaving.
