The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Alternately, we could go to mail-in balloting. It not only is easier for everyone, it increases participation in all demographics.

It's the same thing I point out with people saying "Obama's gonna take our gurnz", unless you think he can somehow overcome the 66% threshold, the constitution isn't going anywhere.

But he's totally going to use an Executive Order to override everything. >.>

I think that the presidential terms should be lengthened to 5 years. Just my opinion.

So, after Bernie senpai failed to notice her, Stein is trying to draw his supporters away from the "tyranny" of the DNC towards the Greens. It probably won't amount to much, as only the die hards who aren't falling in line are likely to listen.

Still, I definitely hate her now.

I never realized how nuts Stein was. She was a bit extreme in 12 but she's acting even more over the top.

"Tyranny of the DNC"

Did... Did she watch the same convention as me? Because I got the exact opposite of "tyranny" from those speeches.

The DNC is beating the RNC in terms of ratings, so now Trump wants his supporters not to watch.

You should see my Facebook. I have one friend who is a diehard Bernie supporter and he's going nuts about supporting the DNC somehow being the same as "negotiating with terrorists".

He's a pretty shit Bernie supporter if he doesn't support Bernie's choice for president.

I'd say start posting "I support Bernie in supporting Hillary, because I'm a real Bernie supporter" memes, but I'm an ass like that.

I have two friends that intend on voting for Stein because they hate both Clinton and Trump. They're perfectly willing to risk the most catastrophic president ever in Trump, and if he wins they'll say it's the DNC's fault for nominating Hillary, even though she won the popular vote anyway.

They don't see it as a problem though as their theory is that conservatives can vote for Johnson and progressives vote for Stein, and independents will decide the winner. Not only is it way too idealistic and unlikely that ALL of the conservatives will ditch Trump and ALL of the progressives will ditch Clinton, just to support a third party candidate (especially with Trump having the cult following he does and Clinton having her fair share of supporters) but it will only help Trump in the long run.

I still have yet to see a good argument for why someone that's a diehard Bernie supporter doesn't trust him enough to vote for the candidate he backs.

Hillary Clinton is part of the system. They hate the system, that's why they rallied around Sanders. Now that he's bought into the system they're abandoning him too. It's not really that hard to understand their reasoning, even if it's flawed.

Most people I see backed him because they felt he knew what was best for the country. Now evidently they think they know better than him.

Presumably they chose him over Clinton because they believed she did not know how to best run the country, and they're the people who believe both candidates are equally rotten.

Yeah but if Sanders knows how best to run the country then logically you should back the candidate he thinks is best.

This "system" it is so bad to be part of (which is why Bernie was appealing, apparently) is really destroying everything. It would be nice if someone managed to define what it is though, because it is a tad blurry from where I stand.

kkhohoho (4 Score & 7 Years Ago)
#133173: Jul 28th 2016 at 10:29:25 AM

[up][up]Oh, they did believe. They just didn't believe in Sanders in and of himself. They believed in Sanders as a vessel for their own personal beliefs; as a way to vote outside of the system and to bring that system crashing down. Now that Sanders has been proven to be unfit as a proper vessel, they're now turning to other candidates like Stein and Jonhson in the hopes that they'll be more suitable containers for their beliefs. In other words, they care less about the values and ideals of the individual candidates, and more how they can project their own values and ideals onto such candidates, providing that they themselves aren't allied with the system in any way, shape, or form.

Sanders supporters aren't a cult of personality. The Bernie or Bust crowd rallied around him because he was saying things that they wanted to hear. "Support Hillary Clinton," is not one of those things, so they don't back it.

Also the media trumpeting that the DNC were deliberately looking to sabotage Bernie doesn't help their intense dislike of the system.

The system is difficult to define, because it's different for every person. For some it's Wall Street, big business, etc. For others it's the whole way politics works, with rich families and again, corporations, getting such sway over candidates which are supposed to represent constituents. For some it's the DNC and the RNC in general. It's not really one set thing for everyone.

Oissu!
