Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So at the convention they've got the entire arena singing "what the world needs now is love".
And they've literally got everyone chanting "love".
Bunch of fucking hippies.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran@ the Protestants: It seems to be mostly the loopier groups that are supporting Trump, like James Dobson (the Focus on the Family guy). While the organization is currently doing everything in their power to distance themselves from him (they actually kicked him out a while back) he himself won't shut up about how Trump "is now a born-again Christian".
The US is home to a particularly stupid brand of "Christian" who will latch on to literally anything that calls itself Christian, regardless of how much that label is deserved. Those are the Christians who are backing Trump (who aren't the only vote Republican crowd, cause there's a ton of those too.)
The thing about Trump claiming to be a Christian? Literally all the evidence makes it really obvious that he isn't. For him, it's another thing he can claim when talking to an audience that will approve of it.

That's been known for a while. The DNC was definitely hacked by Russian intelligence agencies. Wikileaks posted DNC emails with forensic evidence suggesting that it passed through Russian computers. That's all we know for certain. It's not hard to connect the dots there, though it's theoretically possible that Wikileaks got the emails from an unrelated group of Russian hackers, or that Wikileaks' source stole them from Russia. It's unlikely that we'll ever know for certain, as those sorts of things are incredibly difficult to prove.
It's certainly not unreasonable to assume that Wikileaks got the DNC emails directly from the Russian government, though.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. So this fact-checking article thinks that Trump's connection with Russia is exagerated
—he's hobnobbed with oligarchs there and tried to get business ties there but none yet successfully and any perceived personal connections with Putin are likely more in his head than not.

None of that changes the fact that his foreign policy drastically favors Moscow's interests over that of the US/the West.
If Trump does win, the chances of a nuclear exchange (limited or...not) drastically rise. I expect the Doomsday Clock to move even closer to midnight if he wins, given his downright insane foreign policy and stances on global climate change.
EDIT: Can we just make Biden president? Forever? Pretty please?

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I've always liked Biden as a speaker. He gets a lot of flak for "gaffes", but he was always the Obama administration's go-to guy for when they needed someone to say something passionate and emotional, rather than with proper presidential dignity and reserve. That's not to say that Biden is undignified, but he does the full-throated emotional punch really well.
Biden's legally eligible and certainly qualified, but he's just not up for it on a personal level. The guy has had so much tragedy in his life that you can't possibly blame him for not wanting to be the country's punching bad for four or eight years.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Yeah and he's mellowed in old age, the clips they did of Biden talking about Apartheid realy show what he used to go for it.
As for Biden becoming president, I think he might be able to run at some point, but loosing his son hit him hard, remember he lost his first wife and his daughter upon entering the Senate. Thing is in 8 years Biden will be very old, so I doubt he'd run.
Oh and Bloomburg just took a shot at Trump for his "small loan". And now Bloomburg is kicking Trump as best he can, as a businessman. He's called him a conman and more.

EDIT: John Hinckley, the man who shot Reagan and several others, is set to be released from a mental hospital/prison (under conditions) next months.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

Regarding the most recent polls, what's alarming is that Clinton seems to be getting a negative convention bounce, perhaps due to wikileaks release of the DNC's emails during the primaries.
