Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Rebellion/sedition charges are still tricky as there would need to be enough evidence to bring formal charges and a trial. Also, all the stuff we've said about not wanting to martyr Trump to his followers applies here. Bringing charges against a presidential candidate in the middle of an election is as sure a way to do that as assassination without the benefit of being able to blame a lone madman.

@Kreiger 22: DO EET! DO EET! DO EET!
Anyone got enough levels in Cleric to revive Mc Carthy?
McCarthy was a Red Scare specialist. I doubt he knew shit about fascists.
I don't know that I care much about the dangers of martyrdom anymore. Trump has now officially crossed the line from being a severe risk of pushing social progress back a hundred years to actually being a legitimate threat to American sovereignty itself.
If having him arrested means martyring him to his followers, that's a small price to pay to keep the United States from becoming a Soviet puppet state.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. It's funny how much of the right loves the fuck out of Putin (supposedly for being a "strongman" who exemplifies everything they wish they were, plus similar kinds of social conservatism and ultranationalism) when fifty years ago they were Russia's biggest archenemies.

I don't think admiring Putin actually means he wants to ally with Russa or would bend over to support Russian interests. It's most like being a Worthy Opponent.
@Alley Oop
That's not unusual at all. Supporting past enemies against new ones is a part of the American tradition. Throughout the Cold War they backed neofascists and military dictators against Communists. Then when Islamic extremism became the enemy to fear they backed the Arab Socialist dictators against them. This is nothing new.

He says he will end sanctions, support the Russians in Ukraine, give them Crimea, will stop NATO from defending the Baltics.
This goes far beyond admiration. He doesn't treat them as an enemy, his entire policy is about acting in their best interests. Which are mutually exclusive with ours.

Oh really when?I'd also like to say that I don't think you could make any criminal charges come from this, since Trump didn't specifically tell or ask Russia to hack Hillary Clinton. His Exact Words were "I hope you're able to", with the added "I think you will be mightily rewarded by our press."
And yet despite the fact that the alternative is making Wolfenstein The New Order a reality, Clinton is still having issues.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/07/clinton-campaign-email-accounts-were-targeted-by-russians-too/
- The last section, "Game of Pwns" is the relevant bit to the conversation.
And disruption falls in line with Russian military and political doctrine. Information warfare—including cyber attacks, "soft" cyber-like social media propaganda and disinformation, and the implication of the ability to inflict political and economic damage on potential or actual adversaries—is an integral part of Russian military doctrine. Information warfare also factors into the Russian military-political concept of "containment"—preventing a potential adversary from attacks on Russia or threatening Russia's interests.
(...)
"Information operations, which can be non-military or military, are proceeding throughout the conflict, i.e. continuously," Lalu wrote. "In this sense, discussions on whether the term information war or warfare can be used before a clearly verified armed attack or an imminent threat of such an attack takes place, do sometimes sound unpractical." Information warfare like the DNC breach fits into what the Soviet military theoretician Mikhail Tukhachevsky called "deep battle"—"influencing the enemy simultaneously throughout the whole depth of its territory."
The main approach Russia has taken in information operations, Lalu noted, "has been breaking the unity of the target audience." Through its news media, through covert information operations, through use of social media (including Wikipedia leaks and possibly fake Twitter accounts spewing populist/nationalist propaganda in various countries that the Russian government senses are vulnerable), and through hacking, Russia could seek to break the unity of NATO countries and undermine its military readiness.
I'm not convinced Trump is smart enough to conspire with Russia, but I do think Putin is smart enough to exploit it.

People are really doubling down on the False Equivalence with the two candidates. Big fucking deal if the people themselves are unlikeable, what about their platforms? What about the things they believe in?
Or maybe it's because that despite the economic downturn, there are enough sufficiently sheltered idiots who think that using "cuck" once a twice a day will keep them safe from a fascist purge* .

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Fucking hell, Trump really is with the Russians isn't he? Not even just overly friendly and stupid, he's genuinely on their side.
When did this happen?
Oh really when?
