The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]True, but advocating rape also means your advocating other things that are illegal like assault, or coercion, or drugging people against their will. It's not really the same thing.

It still sets a bad precedent.

Advocating rape logically counts as advocating sex-based discrimination, which implies hate speech against the discriminated gender (in this case, women). You have laws against hate speech. Prosecute those fuckers with them.

Donald Trump to Russia: Please Hack Hillary!

Oh sweet Jesus, he's actually trying to commit treason now isn't he?

"Yup. That tasted purple."

... OK, I will lose all of what's left of my currently very minimal respect for the US federal government if they don't have the guts to charge him with treason or some other similar charge, because what the hell else would you call what he did?!

You have to prove the Russians listened to him first. Otherwise that falls under free speech.

See: Definition of treason is very strictly limited under the Constituion, which I've linked before but won't hunt down again right now.

... Can't you at least slap him with a huge fine for attempting to publicly solicit blatantly illegal foreign interference in domestic elections? I mean, hacking is a crime, and he's not just publicly asking for someone to do it to his political opponents, but asking a foreign country that his country is currently not on friendly terms with to do so.

Well the obligatory denials are being made. (Interestingly the Wa Po is not running with the supposedly outrageous part of Trump's comments.) And he could go back later and claim that he was being sarcastic or something. (This is all coming after Obama made an announcement officially naming and shaming Russia for the hack and leak.)

Worth pointing out that Trump has alternated between claims of "being a great friend of Putin" and "knowing nothing about Putin" depending on what sounds better at the time.

... So you can arrest a person for sarcastically proclaiming intent to enact a suicide bombing, but you can't arrest a person for sarcastically soliciting illegal action from a foreign entity?

You would have to prove actual conspiracy rather than just bombastic statements and even then I don't know if there's a law that covers this. I'm not sure we even have precedent.

[up][down]Bomb threats (not just suicide bombing), death threats, etc, are a bit more concrete in the "intending grievous, life-threatening harm to others" department.

Promoting the legalization of a serious crime despite overwhelming consensus among the population that it's a crime should be a crime in itself!

Nope. If that were true everyone who advocates drug legalization would be in prison.

AFAIK there is no overwhelming consensus in American society on the issue, or possibly any consensus at all given its divisiveness.

Somehow I think the events of the past 2 years suggest that rethinking what "freedom of speech" means in American public life is likely to meet with as much success as gun law reform. SWAT teams can't possibly have the resources to storm that many basements...

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Angry Sanders supporters shut down streets outside DNC.

The big issue with free speech in relation to legalizing various crimes is which crimes are classified as protestable?

I do think we should have better hate speech laws though. Stuff like outlawing nazi propaganda (except for educational purposes, like in documentaries), classifying the KKK as a terrorist organization, and making it so saying "insert group here should be killed" isn't allowed.

The JCOS and NATO heads probably wouldn't actually follow him.

Buuuut, that would destroy the long history of America's military remaining apolitical. And of course Trump's supporters would likely go full insurgent.

Things would be bad, to say the least.

The President should do what Eisenhower did when the Governor of Arkansas tried to defy federally-mandated integration of all schools: Send in a little over 1000 soldiers from both the freaking 101st Airborne and a combination of Arkansas Military District units. (Well, not literally do that, but use that as an example.)
