Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What I am calling for clearly wouldn't be a revolution in the sense that anyone else here seems defines it. What I would like to see is something along the lines of the labor movement or civil rights movement, which, despite fierce resistance by those in power, eventually forced the powerful to make significant concessions to economic and social justice respectively.

Yeah, the Tunisians had such a fucking awful time. The Portuguese, too. And those who went through the Colored Revolutions in Eastern Europe.
It's a Trolley problem, and they're Kantian.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.@ Captain- I have a problem with your evoking those movements and speaking of revolutions to excuse assholeish behavior. Both because those Bernie people at least claim to want a seat at the table (some are even delegates). And more importantly they seem to most often be assholeish against people who are/were members (sometimes leaders) of the civil rights and other movements
Oh, and regarding the "Bernie Or Bust" thing, a Cracked article actually talked to a number of people at the convention that don't fit the "Bernie Bro" mode
, including one really depressing interview with an injured Marine veteran (injury wasn't service-related) living on disability who's to the point that he's had to resort to squirrel-hunting in order to keep his kids from starving once the monthly food-stamps run out. As the article points out, it's less that people hate Clinton and more that they saw Sanders as someone actually speaking for their needs, rather than "business as usual".
Thing is Sanders hasn't stopped speaking for them, you can see that with his little of script "no TPP during the lame duck session" bit.
I find it hard to understand how a person can call themselves a supporter of a political figure when disagreeing with that figure on something so fundemental as who to vote for for president.
Likewise I find it hard to understand how a person can call themself a progressive but refuses to vote for increased healthcare, an increased minimum wage, increased access to college, increased regulation on the banks and stopping the TPP. I'm a progressive and all that shit sounds great to me.
I personally suspect that the Bernie Or Bust people were never actually Bernie supporters, they never believed in him, they either believed in a fictional Bernie that they'd created or they more likely were always simply voting for whoever they could to try and stop Clinton, they were never pro-Bernie, just anti-Clinton.

It is hard for people to support the system when the system has so utterly failed them like with our injured Marine veteran in that article.
The Internet left, Progressive Unicorn Brigade, emogressives, whatever you want to call them, do this in every election cycle. They find a candidate, they fall in love with him (or her), they declare them to be the messiah, and then pitch a fit when they don't get what they wanted. It's never about the actual candidate.

It's definitely Loving a Shadow, and it's happening on both the extreme left and the extreme right. The people that aren't racist and sexist that support Trump are mostly only doing so because they think he's anti-establishment.
Also, part of the issue I think with people seeing Clinton as evil is they see Bill Clinton as evil for one or more reasons and they can't look at her without seeing her through his lens. Unfortunately with how she's blundering these scandals (real and fake) she's not likely to shrug that off.

Oissu! So we've got the Dem roll call now, so far they seem to be going "For Sanders who we love and who has done so much good we cast X votes, and for Hillary Clinton who will be the next president of the United States we cast Y votes".
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranLooks like there is at least one group not boycotting North Carolina right now.
"Yup. That tasted purple."
Potentially. It could also be a sort of weird self-interest. They'd want to warn their own citizens wanting to travel into it, but aren't above profiting off of North Carolina.
Part of me wants/needs investments in this state because we are fucking dying but part of me wants to watch Mc Cory starve.
Oh really when? The roll call vote on the convention floor is basically the (now-ceremonial in the age of the primary system) process that makes it official.
Edit: Well not completely ceremonial because supersaturates are a thing but mostly. The result is usually a Foregone Conclusion well before the floor vote.

This country was also founded on slavery and genocide. That doesn't mean we shod emulate them.
