The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]The general thinking seems to be that it Clinton starts a war or something they'll be responsible for it because they voted her in. What they don't seem to get is that by not voting for her they'd also be responsible for anything Trump does.

The argument I keep seeing is, "Why should we always be expected to vote for the lesser evil?"
The answer to which is, self-evidently, "because the greater evil is worse". Unfortunately, most people who take that attitude in the first place are less interested in getting the best possible outcome for the country and more interested in supporting the plucky underdog so they can dismiss the country's problems with "well, if my unelectable candidate were president..."

Of course, that's also conceding the point that Clinton is a lesser evil rather than an actual good candidate in her own right, which I don't believe for a second, but good luck convincing any of them of that.

@"cuck": imagine the kind of soft-hearted person, over-civilized, timid and cowardly. An Extreme Doormat whom not even their intimate partner respects. Like "slut", the literal, sexual sense is only tangential.

This. The reason people are calling Sanders a "cuck" is to create an image that Bernie is a weak, simpering "Beta Male" who couldn't even establish dominance over a woman. It's misandry-via-misogyny, meant to shame him for giving in and backing Hillary rather than putting her in her place. It's like "pussy-whipped" except that instead of shaming a man for being tamed by his woman, it's shaming him for being too weak to control his woman.

As it stands, atheists are the least-trusted religious group in the US, though.

Worse than Muslims?!

Wait, what? Being the last to speak is generally considered the position of prestige for the night.

This. It's a general rule that you end on a high note. You're supposed to build up gradually to the big finale. That's how, like, everything everywhere is done. Storytelling, political conventions, concerts, etc. Going last means you are the toughest act to follow. The big finish, the final blowout, the ultimate takeaway of the evening. It says, "When people remember this night, we want them to remember you more than anyone else."

Going last is a high honor, not an insult.

Bernie what are you doing? You can get more done as a Democrat than an independent.

No reason he can't still work with Democrats while he's in the Senate. He just doesn't want to identify as one. As he said, he started his career as an Independent. He IS an Independent, he was just trying to go Democrat for the sake of the election.

Sure, he could stick around and faff around in the establishment, but Sanders doesn't want to be part of the establishment. He made his bid for Democrat nomination, he failed, and now he's planning on packing up his platforms and heading home to have some of that tasty Indie sweet tea and a nice long rest in his Indie bed that he's missed so much.

Just as soon as he finishes doing everything he can to see Hillary take Presidency.

To some people Clinton is a lesser evil. I think most posters here believe she's a generally good candidate with a few questionable positions.

[up]It might be out of date but I did see a poll saying more Americans would be willing to vote for a Muslim president than an atheist.

I really don't like any candidate, and I don't like politics as a whole, but this year it's such an important period to hamper the Republicans as much as possible.

Especially when they've proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they hate Clinton/Obama more than they love the country as a whole.

I don't think a lot of them hate Obama actually. Most of the people I know that are hardcore Bernie supporters voted for Obama in the last election. Ironically the one Stein fanatic I know is backing Hillary.

@Tobias on the last page: 2015 Gallup Research poll (found via 538): "If your party nominated an otherwise qualified candidate and happened to be ________, would you vote for them?" A Muslim candidate got a higher percentage of Americans in general than an atheist (barely - 60% to 58%).

According to that poll 9% of atheists would not vote for another atheist. What?

Could be the type of person who believes faith in something greater makes a person a potentially better public servant, even if they themselves can't believe in it.

It's not that out there.

"No religion" =/= atheist. It would include people who just aren't that religious but don't necessarily believe there is no God.

It's worth noting that, from what I've heard, a fair number of these protestors are resigned to voting for Clinton. The protest is more aobut expressing displeasure with the outcome (and with the email issue) than anything else, and demonstrating that the democrats cannot take their support for granted. That's on top of the handful of remaining "Bernie or Bust" voters.

@Kyosta: How many Republicans support Bernie? The only Republicans I can imagine supporting Bern are Trump supporters (supposedly, quite a few Trump supporters actually kind of admire Bernie more or less for being a political outsider).

@LSBK: I've communicated with someone a bit like that-an atheistic agnostic who nonetheless really likes the values of Protestant Fundementalists and was a really enthusiastic Cruz supporter.

[up][up]You mean protesting that more people didn't vote for their guy? That does not make them come off better.

[up][up] Mostly Trump supporters really; the kind of people for whom the system is a total failure, and must be replaced with something that will serve their needs. This kind of voting block is very, very susceptible to rallying around a particular figure and adopting their policies for themselves, and Unfortunately, Trump is who've we ended up with, so instead of these people adopting leftist policy positions and supporting leftist candidates, we get a massive growth of the alt-right.

[up] It's more that they (like me) don't trust the democrats to enact any of the reforms included in the party's current platform without major pressure from the population to do so.

[up] No, but that's what I've been told by someone who's at one of the protests right now. It's worth noting that, like pretty much every other millennial protest movement (BLM, occupy) it's extremely decentralized, so one group of people might be calling for one thing while another has a different agenda.
