The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

DNC hack is Watergate but worse. For context, it's Putin the article is targeting, not anyone at the DNC.

I'm pretty sure diplomatic relations with Russia will be practically non-existent after this election.

Idiots on the alt-right are claiming the DNC should be indicted for letting Karla Oritz speak. I had to unfollow a cousin who kept sharing BS about it.

Depends who wins, probably. And not having diplomatic relations with Russia is not a good thing. It's always best to have the possibility open, even if you're dealing with a scumbag.

Didn't America tinker with the Russian presidential election in the nineties to tip the scales in Yeltsin's favour, or is that just a conspiracy theory?

If Trump wins then NATO, or at least America's support of NATO, will be nonexistent and the Russians are gonna have free reign over the Baltics, the Middle East, Africa, and the Pacific.

And given the shaky state of the EU and Western politics in general I've got doubts that Western Europe will really be able to stop them.

Oh really when?

Figures.

For what's it's worth, I don't think Clinton would cut off ties with Moscow. However this does demonstrate that cybersecurity needs to be taken seriously.

The USA fucked with quite a few democratic processes. The list of their misdeeds is long.

@Tactical: Regarding Sanders returning to the senate as an independent, I've been told that he's required to remain an independent for the remainder of his current term due to having been elected as one. Anyone know if that's correct?

Yeah, the chances of the US cutting diplomatic ties with Russia are nil. Cutting ties like that is just short of declaring war, or at least a long-term period of "fuck your country" (see: US-Cuba relations). Trump would have no reason to and clinton isn't insane enough to. It's not going to make relations any friendlier if Clinton ends up winning the election, but it's an "add it to the list of reasons why you're an asshole" thing, not a "of course, you realize, this means war" thing.

Incidentally, I'm not sure how to feel about Bernie's behavior in all of this. It's clear that he can't control his supporters (which isn't really his fault, exactly) but at least he's telling them to stop being assholes and support Clinton. On the other hand, if he had done that a month ago, we'd probably be have ended up with the same shit then that's happening now — which would have been better for the party, as the sooner the drama is dealt with the more time people have to calm down and vote with their head (Hillary > Trump) rather than their emotions (Bernie or Bust).

I feel like Bernie has traded some of the health of the Democratic party for policy concessions from the Clinton campaign. Without knowing the details of those behind-the-scenes negotiations, we'll probably never really know whether it was worth the trade off.

The Clinton and Sanders camps are in talks about getting Bernie to nominate Clinton as a show of unity after the roll call.

Also, a minority of Bernie supporters are still being huge assholes.

I'd like to point out that it's not Accentuate the Negative that the news media thrives on, per se, but rather on things being chaotic and disruptive. No one watches the news if they think they already know how everything's going to turn out; viewership depends on the potential for things to awry.

I really have to wonder what the Bernie or Bust people expect to happen. Even if by some freak chance they actually did disrupt the convention it would probably just end with Sanders telling them to knock it off. What good is doing that sort of thing when the guy you're trying to help doesn't even want your help?

The argument I keep seeing is, "Why should we always be expected to vote for the lesser evil?" And every time I try to explain that the greater evil in this case is pretty much Sauron, I get told I've given up but that the Bernie Or Bust people have no reason to.

They seriously think now is a good time for their "principled stand." If you try to explain vote splitting to them, they just blame Clinton and the DNC for not backing Bernie.

I've yet to have the courage to ask one of them if their principled stand is more important than the safety of global society. They'd probably just scream at me.

LSBK Since: Sep, 2014

I've never understood how that could be a considered a truly principled stand. Like, I get not liking either candidate, but if you admit that one is the lesser evil, then that means the other is a greater evil. If you actually feel that way I don't understand potentially facilitating the one you consider a greater threat getting into power based on "principle".

Even if I can sympathize I don't see how you can justify that. Assuming we're not talking about people who are convinced they're exactly the same.

I had one idiot tell me that "it's like choosing between being assaulted and being murdered", clearly thinking this was a killing argument. To which I can only say, "you do realize that if you choose murdered you are literally suicidal, right?"

Speaking of murder, I assume everyone has seen this? It came up in the autism thread, but I didn't know if it had made the round here.
