Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Doesn't Assange have some sort of sex crime prosecution hanging over his head? Ah, it's in Sweden, not the U.S.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yes, Assange is facing prosecution in Sweden for a rape accusation. He is afraid that it's (merely) a pretext for then extraditing him to the US, hence the flight into the Ecuadorian embassy.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI believe I'm confusing Assange with someone else, then. Sorry, move along.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I used to wonder given the timing of those allegations whether they were a means of silencing him, but given his current behavior I'm thinking it's just him being a Chaotic Stupid dickbag.
Or a persecution complex? I remember hearing among the arguments that he said he'd face the death penalty (which I think Sweden expressly forbids extraditing anyone who would face that, and at any rate I don't yet see what possible charge that could bring capital anything involving wikileaks could bring).

The damned queen and the relentless knight.![]()
I mean, getting sent off to a black site in Eastern Europe where he'll never be heard from again/abruptly dying from an undiagnosed heart condition with no family history isn't much better than being executed by the US, plus it gives Sweeden plausible deniability.

Assange just has a massively overinflated ego; he thinks he's so important that he can't imagine the US not gunning for him, so he views everything through the lens of "I am super important and a rebel against The System, so of course The Man is out to get me".
You can't disappear someone as high-profile as Assange. If he vanished from government custody (of any government), the entire planet would immediately suspect foul play... which would make him a martyr in the eyes of the conspiracy nut types. The CIA is too smart to run themselves afoul of the Streisand Effect... even assuming they give a damn about him in the first place.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
If he weren't a citizen of an allied country, he'd already be dead. As things stand, he's not worth sparking an international incident over.
I also beg to differ; stick him in prison for a few months and deny him any and all communication with the outside world, and soon enough the world forgets anot him and you can do what you will. Some people will take notice of course, but it won't be long before people cease to care.

Of course, attitudes like that don't help deflate his ego, either. "I'm such an important and powerful person that major governments want me dead" is basically his entire identity at this point, regardless of whether it's based in reality or not.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Funny how we get all the flak for messing with other countries' governments, but when those same countries (or their citizens) start trying to manipulate U.S. elections...
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Clearly they are entirely in favour of her.
Stephen Colbert, who I normally like, is pushing the "DNC was a disaster" narrative too. Remember how you and Jon Stewart liked to claim to be non-partisan Steve? You've pretty much ruined any claim you had to that.

Fighteer, what are you on about? I see no mention of statutory rape or child molestation here
or here
.
That's some good, solid work, right there.
