Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Schultz gets booed off stage trying to speak to the Florida delegation pre-convention
Apparently not everyone's satisfied with her having a resignation kick in at the end of the week.
Musing on
I just realized how much money Trump's going to save on travel expenses by not having to fly around the country. Between the free publicity and the fact that merely speaking his name will cause him to appear among you, he might actually be able to make half a billion work.

Well, the fact that she's seemingly getting a position in Clinton's campaign as compensation is certainly part of that. In what world is that a good idea? Regardless of whether or not she's being Kicked Upstairs or rewarded for a job well done, it doesn't look good, and Clinton's image is bad enough as is.

Fairly certain obama managed with less money. Not a lot less, but less. Up here the liberals took power while spending less, brexiters weren't nearly as well funded as remain. Money doesn't go nearly as far as it used to.
A couple pages back people were losing their shit about the daily polls and you really shouldn't. daily national polls are utter shite at predicting anything this far out. 538, the best damn pollsters in the biz, don't even really take dailies into account. Getting an accurate gauge of how things will go down is far more complicated then asking people who they will be voting for.
Overall trends are kinda shakey right now. It'll be hard to say who's got more movement until a few days after the DNC at best.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote? At this point, irrational as I know it to be, I am experiencing a real kernel of fear, as much as I am partial to stoicism. Though that's certainly been influenced by recent rumblings in climate science that paint an even bleaker picture of the year 2100.
Donald Trump's New Era Speech during the convention and Christie's mood Kangaroo Court for Clinton certainly doesn't help deflect the image of a dictator on the rise, as unlikely as that is.
I always resented Sanders being called "liberal Ron Paul", but I'd take that epithet (and I suspect so would he) over "The man who could've saved us from Donald Trump had the left cared to read the writing on the walls."
Can anyone come up with some good news in Americsn politics?

Question: on anther forum that follows the election, something noted that Trump's convention bump on the polls at best tied him with Clinton when in 2012 Romney managed to briefly get ahead of Obama? I'm not in a position right now to thoroughly fact check that but I wondered if anyone could confirm.
I was specifically talking about the polling average for the past week; Trump is up by about a point.
So supposedly, it took a personal call from Obama for DWS to finally heed the calls to resign.

While I DO agree that Trump becoming president would be a shitshow, I don't really agree with all the talk about how it would cause the metaphorical or even literal end of the world.
As much of a moronic bigot Trump is, the President is just one of the US government's three branches. Without the backing of the Legislative and Judicial branch, he'll be essentially powerless.
I've actually seem some moderately pro-Trump people claim that if he does win, Congress and the Supreme Court will more often than not keep him check, so it won't be as bad as many people say it would be.
Mind you, I would MUCH rather he lose outright, of course.
Due to downticket synergy, a Trump win would almost certainly result in the Republicans retaining or increasing their control over Congress and Trump getting to pack the Supreme Court with two or three of his cronies. And you had better believe that the Senate leadership would take the opportunity to gut the filibuster if it would mean giving them four unobstructed years to pass whatever garbage comes out of their monkey brains.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Been thinking about this whole election, and you can take or leave this opinion for what it's worth, coming from someone safely ensconced an ocean away:
Stop panicking about "Bernie-anythings". That narrative only serves to alienate and dis-engage your left, which is the last thing you want. I also strongly suspect a lot of it may be tracked back to false-flag trolls. It's the internet. People lie on it.
Also stop giving Trump attention by panicking about him. That largely also just works to strengthen him. He's an epic-level troll. That's all he is.
Instead, what you should be focusing your political energies on is the twin houses of congress. The republicans have tied their fortunes to a troll. This is an unique historic opportunity to annihilate them. Never mind the presidency - you're not going to get people excited to vote for Hillary. She's a steady pair of hands, and the champion of the status quo. . But a narrative about kicking every last R that's up for reelection to the curb? That. That might get people all across the democratic tent excited.
Let's not tie ourselves to taking out TPP, which is at best a leaky lifeboat, and sacrifice the entire ship as a result.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

I am literally staring at an ad right now on this very site, regurgitating Trump's quote about "They're sending drugs, they're sending crime, they're sending rapists," before following up with, "There is no place for hate in the White House."
The adage is true. Speak of the Devil and he really does appear.
