Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That would be stupid; the proper time would be about two weeks prior, so the media has a chance to chew on it and Clinton's team doesn't have time to formulate a response.
The best thing you can do in the end is vote and help persuade others to vote. Nobody can predict the future, but the smart money remains on Clinton winning.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"But I live in New York. My state's going blue anyway. I can't fly down to Florida or Ohio and campaign there.
And while the odds might still be in her favor, things are going really badly right now. It could change, and I hope it does, but I don't want to find out that DWS destroyed the free world because of her selfishness.
@Dogs: Try to remain calm. The events of this year are, in the grand scheme of history, fairly normal. While the realization that human civilization has been balanced on a razor's edge since the dawn of the industrial era is not a pleasant one, we are still alive. I won't tell you everything will be alright; whatever people might say, we don't know that for sure. Yet, in the face of an uncertain future, we must press on. Even if Trump wins the presidency, we must press on, as a nation and as a species.
Every person no matter meek has, in their own way, some small amount of agency over the course of history simply by living their lives. Allowing anxiety to get the better of you simply isn't a viable course of action; You have to go on living your life for better or worse. Do what you can where you can, do your best to be kind and helpful, and above all, don't lose hope.

@Dogs: Sooner or later in our lives, everyone has to come to terms with the existential dread I suspect you're experiencing one way or another. Some people find solace in religion, others drown out the sorrows of the world with booze and smokes.
You either need to find a coping mechanism, or accept life for what it is.

Just to add my opinion, I agree. Even if Donald Trump is elected as president it will not be the end of the world. Patience and steadfastness will serve you more than constant worry.
I don't think Donald Trump will act in such a way as to be described "insane" if he becomes president. His love of self is too great to admit the possibility of being seen as a despot. Always remember that there are limits to what he can do even as president and that, should he somehow circumvent his way through the institutional checks of the state and become a tyrant (a fairly extreme situation), the body politic always has the right to resist despotism. A more efficient way to become the master of the state is to dominate it through the constitution and the organs established by law. He is not a republican nor is he a democrat, and you can see this by his values and character alone.
I find it helpful to read Marcus Aurelius' Meditations and any other piece of literature from the Stoics.

"It is true that we are called a democracy, for the administration is in the hands of the many and not of the few."I think that, if anything, we can rest assured that Trump is too bloody incompetent to make good on many of the things he's promising, and he'd be so awful at actually governing that getting tossed out on his ear in 2020 would be all but certain.

I personally find solace by ignoring things that I, as a singular person, am unable to affect. That does not mean that I won't try to make life better for others by joining up with others, but it minimizes the worries that I do have to those I can have influence on.

Thats still not going to stop him from ruining the country and ruining the world as he would refuse to defend our allies in the east and west from China and Russia respectively.
We would be giving up everything.
Then there is also the civil rights issues and disastrous supreme court issues.

You should never underestimate the damage that supposed incompetents are able to do once they get in office. It won't be as bad as the doomsday prophets predict (bureaucratic inertia or the damn Supreme Court would stop the worst of it, even a re-staffed Supreme Court would strike down a religious test for immigration), but it would be quite terrible.
The key is the chance of him getting elected is still surpassingly low, and will be much lower by the end of the week once the Dems have shown with clarity the kind of choice voters will have in November.
I know Trump being elected would be disastrous. Unfortunately it might be the only thing that would convince these people that lesser evilism is the only intelligent way to vote.
I don't know what kind of ruckus they expect to cause when Bernie is one of the key speakers at the convention.

Well, look at what happened to the Never Trump crowd at the RNC: they got shut down by the floor vote to adopt the rules committee proposal in whole. Something similar would likely happen at the DNC.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Can we please stop making mental health posts in this thread? Take a deep breath, go do something else for a while, and chill out. Alternatively, if you're having serious anxiety issues — like, it's having negative effects on your day-to-day life — then see a mental health professional. A forum thread (especially one about politics) is not the right place to get help in managing those sorts of problems.
Posting "GUYS I'M FREAKING OUT PLEASE REASSURE ME!" every time something happens that can be interpreted as even remotely negative for Clinton if you squint hard enough and tilt your head just right adds nothing to the conversation except to lower the signal-to-noise ratio.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.I'm not optimistic right now myself, both because of the poll and because all of the news coverage is about the protests at the convention in contrast to the unity of the RNC, generally in conjunction with the emails. The media seems to want Clinton to lose- or is at least pushing her vulnerability for a good story.
And I still think Sanders supporters want her to lose and will vote Green or Trump. Why wouldn't they? They don't see her as having any shared political preferences and if she wins, it shows that her "side of the Party" is still viable. If Trump wins, they can blame the loss on her and push their brand as the future of the Party.

@Dogs: Listen. Your own lifespan is a tiny sliver in the fullness of the 6000 or so years of recorded human history, which itself is a tiny sliver of the two hundred thousand years of our species' existence. If there is any meaning to be found in our individual lives, it is as part of the greater whole of humanity which existed long before us and will exist long after we are gone.

I feel like I'm going to have to start applying the "numbskull" thump to these "GUYS I'M FREAKING OUT HERE" posts, as they contribute nothing to the conversation.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"In all seriousness though, maybe some non-panic "prepare for the worst, hope for the best" steps wouldn't hurt.
Example: Got any investments that depend on the stock market? See how the British market reacted to the Brexit vote? Maybe move those things into something less volatile until the election blows over. (Disclaimer: I am not a CPA)
I was a Sanders supporter right up until he officially endorsed Clinton, and now I tentatively support Clinton, barring anything truly egregious being borne out by wikileaks or something. It will take some time for many others, but they'll come around by November.
Can you stockpile gasoline? I thought it denatured after a year or something.
