The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I have to say while the DNC is grossly incompetent, how come everyone is only crying foul at them? Why are they being held to a higher standard than the Republicans who, no doubt, did the same thing?

Considering how little he actually said that wasn't just broad statements or promises that he probably won't be able to keep, I wonder, too.

Of course, my dad (huge conservative) defended him by saying that all politicians do things like this early on, but that makes zero sense because he should be able to know at least a couple things of how to accomplish these goals. And if he indeed already has ideas like that, he needs to show them.

Also, he showed that he's as xenophobic as most Republicans only dream of a president being.

But that's just my two cents. Feel free to correct me if I got information wrong there.

We all know that the RNC is a bunch of corrupt corporate cronies. The enemy's internal politics don't matter that much.

[up]X3 Because most of us support the Dems, plus we have called foul on the Republicans, we called foul on the Republicans rigging attempts during the primary, where their attempts backfired and caused Trump to win.

Another reason to remain hopeful is that Trump's ground game and organization are woefully underdeveloped and no speech will change that.

[up][up]Oh, that's because Clinton (the DNC favourite) is the nominee while Jeb (the RNC pick) isn't. That and the press need someone wake to drag the Dems down and make this a close race.

[up] Yeah, that and money, Clinton isn't spending at this point I belive, let's see where the polls are once she opens her war chest.

Trump only wants to spend half a billion, while Clinton is aiming for 1.5. Both Romney and Obama spent around 1 billion.

Trump is kidding himself with a budget like that.

Money isn't everything, Trump doesn't need to spend much money because everyone else already does his 'promoting' for him.

[up][up] Trump got over 2 billion dollars worth of free media coverage in the primaries as of May, and utterly demolished his opponents despite being outspent many times over. The rules of the game have changed, at least for this cycle.

Campaign money however is necessary to build a campaign. Super PACs and the media don't do that.

[up] Yes, but if Clinton spends a billion on ads and 500 million on campaign infrastructure, and Trump gets another 2 billion dollars in free advertising due to his antics, he doesn't need to spend nearly as much to maintain parity with Clinton.

Assange has threatened before that he had enough to "ruin" Clinton. If he really had anything, he would have let it go by now. Given the weak sauce that they led with on the DNC leaks, I doubt what they have amounts to anything.

TV and door-to-door campaigning are not equivalent or redundant to each other, Capsase. Not sure where you get that idea from at all.

Thanks to the internet you do not need door to door anything anymore, the media machine has it on lockdown. Bernie and Trump have helped prove that.

Trump had a harder time of it in the primaries than he needed to because of a poor ground game. Twitter gets you noticed, but you still need people out there to cajole voters into the booth on election day, or assist people who are homebound or otherwise need a ride to the polls.

[up][up] The GOP will be doing a fair amount of the legwork for him, particularly the congresspeople worried about their own elections.

[up] If anything they tend to be pro-democrat.

Door to door is still important, also you're forgetting that while Trump gets a lot of free publicity from the press Clinton does get some herself. Not enough to outperform Trump alone, but with her financial advantage she should be able to null Trump's free publicity advantage.

More to the point, I want to know why people keep wanking around these day-to-day polls. This ain't a horse race, folks.

Someone should inform the alt-right that their poster boy, Trump, will probably outlaw porn if elected. Well, not Trump himself (I doubt he cares), but a combination of leaving things up to the states and a GOP majority in Congress (and possibly the Supreme Court).

You do realize that's how the US Media frames it, right? As a giant bloody horse race to the death.

On the subject of Assange, if he does have enough to ruin Clinton, then he would likely release the info the day of the vote.
