The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Smokey: It's worth noting that there's a fair number of Trump supporters carrying out false flag operations, at least on reddit.

I was kind of hoping Sanders supporting Clinton would knock some sense into them but it doesn't look like that's happening. The hate is just too strong. Maybe if he hadn't attacked her so hard this problem wouldn't be as bad. I'm still curious how the convention is going to go down. Bern the Convention is still a thing but Sanders is one of their key speakers. Is he going to directly tell them to shut up and go home?

It's everywhere on tumblr, which is mostly liberal (though there are sizable neo nazi groups on there as well).

[up] Definitely true. The right baited the left into attacking her as early as April of last year.

Worked like a fucking charm...

[up] Sanders' campaign didn't even reach 2008 primary levels of vicious, and going off of scientific polling, twice as many Clinton supporters were refusing to vote for Obama compared to the percentage of Sanders' supporters (around 7% now vs 15% in 2008) refusing to support Clinton at this time last year. The Bernie or Bust crowd is half bluster, one quarter a vocal minority, and another quarter Trump supporting trolls.

While I expect the party will try to blame Sanders if they lose in November, this is Clinton's election to lose.

[up]Sanders still got the ball rolling on a lot of this criticism. He also refused to concede the election long after it became impossible for him to win. That certainly didn't help Hillary's campaign.

[up] And Clinton's diehard supporters helped get the birther ball rolling, among other things from the primary that were used against Obama during the general election. It's a reality of what happens when you don't win a primary election; Clinton's attacks on Sanders would've been used against him had he won, and Obama's attacks on Clinton would've been used had she won in 2008.

Seconding the Tumblr stuff. Even if some of the original posters might be false flags (which is possible but unlikely going by their post histories) nevertheless a lot of people I know to be genuine leftists are reblogging the same fanatical pro-Bernie anti-Hillary narratives too, complaining about how Bernie is a traitor, a cis white male supporting the kyriarchy. Plus for some reason a lot of vitriol over the fact that Hilary is white, being reblogged by women who are usually more focused on fandom matters than politics.

[up] It's rather (darkly) amusing seeing the answer to whether or not "Jewish" counts as white changing to suit a person's agenda.

Not just Jewish people, East Asian and certain biracials often get dumped on as "near-white" as needed to excuse petty grudges, or things as inconsequential as Shipping all the time.

It's almost as if people who use social media like Tumblr, Reddit, Twitter or Facebook to express opinions on deeply complex politicians issues are prone to tribalism, exaggerations, hysteria, anger, and stupidity.

It's also a representation of what large groups of people think. When hundreds of thousands of people are talking about how they'll throw the election and let Trump win, that's worrying.

DNC Vice Chair Donna Brazile will serve as Interim Chair through the election.

[up][up] Is there evidence that it's "hundreds of thousands"? Ignoring that boting and sockpuppeting are things I'm pretty sure there aren hundreds of thousand of US based social media accounts talking about throwing the election to Trump.

My mistake, over 30,000 on just one site. Still, even if only part of that is Americans who are of age, that's thousands of people who refuse to vote for Clinton because of wikileaks. That isn't good, and it worries me. You can't just look at how thousands of people are reacting to this sort of thig and go "well it's not gonna be an actual problem."

It's gonna be a fucking problem, especially if wikileaks keeps posting more shit.

I like how the Republicans all ignore the dozens diplomatic personnel that were killed while W. Bush was president. No Double Standard here, no siree.

You wanna know the REAL reason the GOP won't let Benghazi go? It's because they excepted (read: Hoped) that Benghazi would be the "October Surprise" like the Iranian Hostage situation that helped propel Reagan to the White House. But it wasn't. Not even close. That's why they're salty, they tried so hard to use it to bring down Obama's chances at winning re-election, but it failed spectacularly.

And they're still salty about it. So they keep bringing it up, hoping *something* sticks. It won't ever end.

My mistake, over 30,000 on just one site.

Just over Wikileaks? Can I ask where you're getting that number from? It seems absurdly high.

My understanding is that the people getting pissed at Clinton over the Wikileaks stuff weren't going to vote for her anyway, as in she hasn't lost any votes because these people have been shouting about how she's a shill and they won't vote for her for months.

Yes thousands of people is a problem, but you've also got to consider how large the US electorate is. Over 125,00,000 votes were cast in the 2012 presidential election and that was at a miserable 54% turnout. So if it's actually less than thousands and more like hundreds (hundreds who will likely be located in deep blue states I should point out, not to mention some of the hundreds being to younge to vote).
