The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's the optics that are getting to me right now.

[up][up][up]Clinton shouldn't feel any particular loyalty toward Schultz unless Schultz has some dirt on her, considering she pulled a Starscream eight years ago during the 2008 primaries and tried to go over to the Obama camp during the eleventh hour after some public bluster of taking the fight to the convention floor. A betrayal by a campaign manager like that doesn't seem like something you'd forget or forgive.

[up][up] The issue is she has a lot of sway in the party. Not as much as Clinton, but enough to cause problems if she wants.

Also, Schulz's reputation for incompetence makes it somewhat questionable to task her with any role in the Clinton campaign.

Donald Trump wants more vetting on folks entering the country from places compromised by terrorism.

He basically says it's their own fault terrorists were able to attack them.

Not sure if this is something he said as the rnc or came after.

[up][up]...So "honorary chair" actually makes some sense. She's being kicked upstairs into a purely advisory role.

It's possible that her getting the honourary position might have been a condition for her resigning, Clinton may be taking one for the team here.

Still it's good news, I wonder who will take over. Someone said that Obama picks the person? Hmm, big names that aren't going to be active in much stuff soon, Biden is obviously a consideration, maybe Reid, could be someone unheard of though.

[up][up][up] There is not exactly much you can do when you are caught off guard, unarmed and even if you are armed they are armed better than you. Also, wouldn't the US count as a place compromised by terrorism since they have had several attacks as well? Are they going to vet people from California and Florida?

Probably not. Have to say though, my first thought was "I doubt Olbermann could either".

[up]The test in question is Hare's Psychopathy Checklist. Which Olbermann freely admits he himself scores some points on. When talking about the "short attention span" qualifier he notes "this is one where I get some points. Not all my job changes were their fault."

So now the alt-right are calling Sanders a "Maximum Cuckold" for not turning on Hillary over those emails.

People keep having weird expectations of Sanders... nobody seems willing to accept the notion that, when Sanders says he'll do something, he does it.

Ugh. The wikileaks shit is making the rounds on tons of social media sites. Bernie Bros are grabbing onto it and trying to get people to boycott Hillary, even though it lead to Trump winning.

They don't seem to realize that DWS is the one responsible, not Clinton, nor do they seem to know that DWS is resigning.

I'm really getting worried Trump will win.

I'm getting really tired of cuckold being thrown around as an insult. Half the time it doesn't even make sense in context.

[up]x4 Also he is getting pretty much everything he wanted when he started a campaign he knew he couldn't win, policies.

[up]x3 you are not the only one. And that the whole point of Russia hacking the DNC then releasing the results via their mouthpiece wikileaks, they want the easily manipulated dumbass to win and hand Europe to them.

This shit literally gives me nightmares, I am completely not kidding.

I've kind of moved away from the Bernie Bro term myself, partly because a female "friend" of mine has been posting for several months things from wikileaks to the effect she thinks that Clinton stole the selection. And of course there's Susan Sarandon. So, I think it's more of a "fanatical follower" thing than a "bro" thing.

The whole cuckold thing is weird to me because until like a year ago, I only thought of the term in relation to it being a stock joke/plotline with playwrights like Moliere, Shakespeare, and Feydeau. The alt-right use of it (naturally) has a racist connotation missing in these usages.
