The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up]Or to put it another way, if they don't do something definitive and kick this can down the road, the DNC will end up making the "crooked" rhetoric sound more plausible, justified or not.

Just pressuring the Chairwoman into resigning would go a long way.

[up] That I agree on. Not because of this though, she has done a lot of other questionable crap that is way worse.

What we don't like is the "see, the Democrats are corrupt too! They're just as bad as the Republicans!" attitude,

Except nobody here is expressing that attitude. Nobody has said anything to the effect of "They're just as bad as the Republicans", quote me someone saying something like that, because I certainly haven't seen any such posts.

Yeah, right: [quotes] No support at all.
Can we please not get into quoteblock wars? There has been plenty of discussion of left-leaning people in this thread disliking DWS before. Maybe saying "nobody" was a mistake on my part, but the point I'm trying to make is that she's far from universally approved of even on the left.

You realize that political conversation goes on outside of this thread? A lot of people bringing up the DNC thing are using it as justification for "a pox on both your houses" attitudes. People in this thread can respond to things going on outside this thread without their points being invalid.

[up][up]Good. She was not well liked even before this.

...but also bad in that there is now no party leader on the eve of the convention...

Long-term? Probably good. Short-term? Might give the media some more fodder to beat Democrats around the ears with and ask, "What did Hillary know?" as if it's some kind of stock conspiracy in a really bland video game.

It's bad that it was necessary but good that it happened — because it was necessary. Otherwise, what [up] said.

Something that never ceases to amuse me: some of my friends act like the media is untrustworthy, and yet they trust it when it's talking about Hillary.

She's officially resigning after the convention, but she's basically been quarantined by the party until then. She won't be doing or saying anything.

Thank God.

Resigning after the convention makes sense for logistical reasons. Gives everyone time to find an acting chair and start the replacement process, after the Convention is dealt with.

[up] Looking at the history, pretty much anyone could be chair. Tim Kaine was it from 2009–11 and he didn't hold any office during that time.

A majority seemed to not hold any office during their time as chair from the looks of it.

Also looking at the history. The president picks them if they have the office at the time, like now.

Its being reported DWS will join Clinton as an honorary chair on her campaign.

I am flabbergasted by how bad an idea this is.

Hopefully she doesn't end up getting a cabinet position or something like that. Then, even if Clinton didn't know about the shady stuff going on the background, plenty of people will assume otherwise.

She isn't that competent, I doubt she's on the Cabinet shortlist at this point. And if we she was, she probably got tossed off it once she became a liability to the campaign.

[up][up]Honorary chair might just be a toothless position.
