The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's remarkably petty, as far as scandals go. That's not a skeleton, that's barely a stapes !

Thank fucking Christ

After the nomination of Trump, any argument against Superdelegates became null and void.

I would guess that he thinks Sanders would be the nominee without the superdelegates. Except he wouldn't. Hilary beat him in terms of the primary and caucus delegates even without the superdelegates.

She won more states, won the popular vote, won more delegates, won more debates, won more super delegates.

Bernie literally' lost by every metric conceivable.

Unless the rumors that actual election fraud happened turn out to be true. We'll have to see what comes out of wikileaks over the coming week.

Have Hillary or Bernie made any comments about the email leaks?

Supposedly there was some funny exit polling related stuff but I never really looked too far into it.

I'm still not seeing what the benefit would be in keeping that sort of information secret.

[up][up] Speculation about what wikileaks is going to release and (over)analysis of hints being dropped by reps about the content of said leaks.

[up] As far as my state goes, there was a major discrepancy between exit polls and the actual result (which a statistics PHD student wrote a paper on, suggesting that, at the very least, states in which there existed greater potential for election fraud favored Clinton more than those with greater oversight), and a minor scandal where over 100,000 voters were abruptly dropped.

Plus there was a discrepancy in exit polls in several states well beyond the margin of error. Honestly, I still expect that, much like the collusion with the media had the DNC remained impartial, their candidate still would've won.

The Democratic Rules Committee voted overwhelmingly in favor of a major shift in the superdelegate system Saturday night after a deal was reached between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders supporters.

The committee approved nearly unanimously an amendment that preserves the existing superdelegate role for elected U.S. lawmakers and governors, but will bind the remaining superdelegates — roughly two-thirds — to primary and caucus results.

[up][up]Fat chance. Sanders has made it fairly clear he's not looking to do any more damage to the Democratic Party, and more power to him.

If most of the super-delegates are going to be bound, then what is even the point of having them?

Wikileaks has confirmed that they deliberately left those Social Security numbers in. My respect for them has completely evaporated.

Also, they are inheriting a fine alt-right tradition in being totally incapable of concealing their bigotry.

EDIT: Seems like it's the Russian government who may have handed them the documents.

[up][up][up][up] I'd bet money on it.

But even in the absence of all this worse-than-usual corruption and fraud, could Bernie have won? He lost by a wide margin, which became apparent way back on Super Tuesday. I don't know if that can all be attributed to malfeasance in the United States of Never-Say-Socialism.

I can't find any actual statement from Sanders and Clinton themselves, but....

DNC chair Debbie Schultz won't speak at Dem convention following Wikileaks fallout.

Definitely for the best. Even without emails, Schultz's appearance would have been meet with more jeers than cheers.

Bernie Sanders campaign chief says someone must be 'accountable' for what DNC emails show.

About the Republican party being taken over by bigots and extremists

It scares me, but if it kills the party's chances and results in a massive blue sweep, then that could be a great thing for years to come.
