The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] Assassinating him won't make anything better in the long term, if that's what you're implying. It might even be better if he were to gain power and damn himself in the public eye through his incompetence than for him to become a martyr for the alt-right to rally around.

Trump isn't "beating" Hillary yet. And he probably won't. Remember her speech in June? She gave detailed reasons for why he's unfit to be president and called his ideas "dangerously incoherent."

And one thing became clear: If she does that at the debates, she will win.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.

If Trump is killed and become a martyr the alt right will get violent. At the risk of sounding morbid at that point the best thing to do is to finish the job and deal with his followers.

That's not stopping him. Stopping him means stopping all that he is. It means a thorough ideological and popular crushing.

Trump can't win when he's alienated so many demographics, including his own party. To put it this way: When Bush supporters are supporting Hillary as a lesser evil, then Trump cannot win.

Trump can't win. He literally can't given the electorical math. However, Hil can lose, and that means he essentially wins by default.

As for Trump alienating his own party, I've seen that happen firsthand, since my parents are/were both life-long Republicans. My dad's still too rooted in his desire for lower taxes to vote for Clinton, but he knows far better than to fall for Trump's bullshit. My mom on the other hand was kind of compassionate conservative that was attracted to the optimism promoted by Reagan and Bush, but with the Republican party becoming so hateful and fearful, on top of Trump's personal conduct and unsurpassed arrogance, she switched to Democrat (and in fact found much more in common with Sanders).

If this process is repeating across the entire country, Trump indeed does not stand a chance. But if there are just a few more assholes in Pennsylvania or Florida, then it's all over.

@The Handle- I agree, which is why I think it is counterproductive for Sanders' supporters to plan to "send a message" and cut into her votes/risk Trump being elected by voting for a third party.

Like I don't think anyone could manage to get 70% of the vote and even 60% is kind of unlikely, but if it ends up as 52/48 or something like that in favor of Clinton than Trumpism will definitely be alive and well.

Which is why Hillary needs to bury him by exposing him in the debates for being totally unprepared, incoherent, and non-presidential.

Chirac got 80% of the vote against Le Pen in presidential elections. It can be done if the other is enough of an asshole.

I don't know. Logic says that Trump should lose in a landslide, but nothing about this campaign has been logical. If this really is less of a matter of what's being sold and more of a matter of how it's being sold, than Trump has a lot of things in his favor. Is he a horrible piece of scumbucket? Yes, but he's a charismatic piece of scumbucket who knows how to sell his product. He's been approaching this election like a business deal, and in that respect, he's effectively been making a killing. So if it comes down not to who has the actual better policies, but instead to who you just like more on a purely surface level and are able to connect with better, than Trump may well have the advantage there.

I'm kind of scared to admit I kind of agree with some of things Trump says. Like, enough that I might actually go out and vote for him. Keyword there being might.

It does seem a bit strange to bring it up in the first place if you don't want to even a bit further. Then again, I get being a bit anxious here.

[up][up]I've lurked this thread long enough to know that probably wouldn't be a good idea.

[up]Nothing strange about bringing up an opinion at all really.

Remember, I could vote for Trump, but I could also vote for Hillary. I'm mostly undecided at this point, that's probably what I wanted to express. I agree with some of the stuff he says, and I laugh at the other things he says.

[down]I'm far too stressed right now to get into an actual, civil debate right now though. It's nothing against you guys though, it's just me.

You know, Trump isn't actually that charismatic. He has personality, and he has presence, but he doesn't actually have charisma. If someone has charisma, you want to like them, but Trump doesn't have that effect. While he was a terrible president in the long run, Reagan was genuinely charismatic. It's how he got his horrible ideas through.

Instead, you get his bizarrely awful speeches where he never changes his flow or tone and just sort of stares at a teleprompter the whole time while throwing in random ad-libs that reemphasize random elements of the speech with no rhyme or reason.

Even experiencing Trump's soundbites you get the feeling that they're more popular for their bluster and brazenness than their actual charm.

[up][up][up][up]If you're not in the mood to be "converted," that's fine. If you don't want to risk starting a flame war, that's fine.

But since you kind of agree with the guy, and that's not exactly a common opinion here as you well know, it would be an opportunity to bring in additional viewpoints, as long as everybody keeps a cool head about it, so I'd encourage you elucidate on that when you feel like it.
