The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So let's call the DNC celebrity speaker list a mixed bag.

Great. Lena Dunham. Just what we need to convince voters we're not the party of tumblr stereotypes.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.

[up][up] There was a controversy about that, yes. She was 7 at the time, for all it's worth, though.

I believe she also has a habit of making (unintentionally?) racist tweets.

DNC delisted two elected delegates (male) and added two elected delegates (female) for "gender parity". I'm trying to copy+paste shortcut, but my html-fu is weak.

Meanwhile, the Republicans fired two female delegates and added two male ones, to make up for the Democrats' actions.

Just because the RNC is a cloud of crazy in action, we should not excuse the DNC for making idiot decisions. This isn't a finger-wag contest, the DNC has opened themselves up to a lawsuit now for the most silly of reasons, considering these folks were selected to perform the job.

Between this and Lena Dunham, I'm extremely worried that the DNC party is going to choke this away.

The progressive political show The Young Turks faced off with the far-right Alex Jones and Roger Stone at the RNC today.

Lennik, I very much doubt that this will cause Clinton to lose the election. Also, the idea of "tumblr stereotypes" is not a reason to not invite any particular person and that was a very poor criticism of the choice. If you can't come up with something better than that utter weaksauce stuff then maybe there's not a good reason invite Dunham. (Personally I don't care and I find it kind of odd that either political party invites media celebrities to speak at these things.)

Seriously. Why invite celebrities? It's not like they're enacting policy unless they're like Takei or that old comedian guy who's name I can't remember and going into office themselves.

[up][up]I watched that live, literally the second I tuned in just to check on what they were talking about.

As much as I respect Cenk for not putting up with their bullshit, he still gave them what they wanted. By confronting them directly, they get to go all "look at these violent liberals getting triggered," and so on. Of course, by not confronting them, they'd just say they're all a bunch of liberal pussies who can't stand up for themselves. It's a lose-lose situation that demands more finesse to get out of, and Cenk is obviously not that kind of guy.

Nonetheless, Alex Jones and Roger Stone can go fuck themselves.

My mom is watching in the other room because she's on the fence and is realizing that Trump is listing all the things he thinks are wrong but not saying a thing about how to solve them. Small miracles...

So, I heard a rumor that an ad will air before or after he gives his acceptance speech, and is about how we need to stop the bathroom bills. Is there any truth to that?

As hilarious as it is, isn't stuff like this old news? Like, last time wasn't how all the strip clubs in Miami were filled with Republicans at their last convention.

Anyone who isn't completely delusional should get the hypocrisy by now.

On one hand, the Post is very tabloid-y, on the other though there was a cooberating statistic from some porn site or another posted a few pages back.

On the other other hand, there are also lots of out of town protesters in the city, including a sizable number of people representing LGBTQ groups.

Which is not to say it would surprise me if the irony was accurate.

Edit to add: The Economist ranks a Trump Presidency as the third worst thing that could happen to the world economy. (Image via Clinton's Twitter). (The Economist is a UK pro-business mag but they don't always back Republicans in their opinion columns; they backed Obama, IIRC.)

Just heard over Twitter that Trump waved away calls to put Hillary in Prison, saying "Let's beat her in November" or something to that effect.

So, the NBC commentators basically said outright that the Republican Party as they knew it was dead because of how much of the speech centered around isolationism and protectionism. Besides being all blustery promises with no plan it could be summed up as "America first, fuck everyone else, and every foreign distaste of the last 8 years was either Hillary or Obama's Fault".
