The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Wait is that picture meant to be her giving a Nazi salute? Because I was assuming they hadn't included an image of the salute itself.

The Baltics are strategically indefensible and just about everyone knows it. Fortunately they're also not worth anything (not many people, little industry, and less natural resources) so they're not worth risking nuclear war over, but actually defending them would be a fool's game.

They're worth a lot politically, if the US refused the defend the Baltics then the entire of NATO would collapse, it would be taken as proof that the US has no desire to actually defend its allies and that we in Europe woudl be better off making friendly with the Russians.

Also they're perfectly defensible, you just use MAD to defend them, it's worked so far.

[up] Considering Trump seems to want to team up with Russia, Europe would more likely be aligning itself with China.

Possibly, though I suspect that Russia would have no interest in actually teaming up with the US, certainly not with Trump, he would be used and discarded as the useful idiot he is by Putin.

I suspect that Trump would simply purge anyone stonwalling him.

That would require gutting several departments, ones that even Republicans aren't big on attacking.

Then Trump is going to try and purge the Republicans who won't play along.

There's no way a Trump presidency won't end in some sort of civil war, even a comparatively minor one.

Republicans (at least the mid to top level ones) aren't big on Trump being the nominee, I'm not sure if they get a vote anymore.

If nothing else, the Democrats can just do what the Republicans have done to Obama; say no before Trump suggests anything.

That works better if the Democrats could actually get control of Congress in a Trump presidency, which seems near-fantasy at this point.

All the Democrats need to do is prevent a Republican super majority. Which probably won't happen this cycle. And the anti Trump Republicans should be enough for the Democrats to work with them to stop Trump in the Senate at least.

I'm really more concerned about what happens after November 8th even if Clinton wins. It hardly seems as though Trump's most...vocal supporters would be the type to accept a loss, however definitive the vote turns out to be.

An actual, for-reals civil war is not going to happen even under a Trump presidency. An uptick in violence and domestic terrorism, maybe. But you're not going to see states trying to secede or army units going rogue, and that's what it would take for a civil war. A Trump presidency would not be good for America, but let's not get hysterical.

@Marq: Despite the hyperbole, in the near term, a Trump presidency would do no such thing. If he actually managed to accumulate dictatorial power (very, very unlikely even given the political climate; despite the parallels to 1930's Germany things have a long way to go before they get that bad), that might be a possibility, but the US has a long way to go before it's in danger of a civil war or revolution. The revival of militant left wing groups and black nationalist groups is a distinct possibility though.

I could see army units going rogue, all it would take is Trump to order the military to commit crimes against humanity and units to refuse, followed by Trump trying to have troops court-marshalled for refusing to obey his orders.

You would also possibly see some real plotting by the JCOS if Trump refuses to support NATO or orders deliberate breaches of the Geneva convention and so on.

That's not "going rogue", that's doing exactly what they're supposed to. Military personnel are required to refuse illegal orders. Trump could have them court martialed for doing so, but they would almost certainly be found not guilty if he did.

You and I wouldn't define it as going rogue but I suspect Trump would, hell he's nuts enough that I could imagine him ordering them to simply be attacked. Now such a situation would likely just result in the military sitting on this hands and refusing Trump's orders, but if Trump tried to have civil forces detail and try military forces things could get messy.
