Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That really isn't a good approach for statistics in general, especially when it comes to probability. That 538 has been among the most accurate helps lend it more credibility versus the 24 hour news network talking heads, sure, but the favorites don't always win and just because something has been predictive up to now doesn't mean it's either logical/rational or will be predictive going forward (for a counter-example, the old Redskins Rule
for presidential elections which broke down soon after it was formulated).

The damned queen and the relentless knight. So has anyone mentioned this:
RNC Spox Invokes Twilight Sparkle From My Little Pony To Dismiss Melania Plagiarism
To continue this years trend of incredible surrealism.
Probably the most relevant thing to come out of the plagarisim thing
- the guy in the article was one of W's speech writers and no competent team of speech writers would have let that pass. Implication: If ti was accidental, Trump does not have competent speech writers.
Maybe they're just trying to distract from all the horrible bloodthirsty things that were said at this convention, by giving us this blatant lighthouse of ridiculouslness to focus on?
I mean, holy shit, remove ROE?
But, bringing Twilight Sparkle in...
I FEEL SO NOSTALGIC.
WHEN WILL THERE BE A NEW SHOW THAT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE MLP DID?
I mean, there's Steven Universe, but it's coming out way too slowly! And the episodes are too short!
More to the point, it's hilarious that they bring MLP, since I don't think there's anything more antithetical to Republican thought than MLP's Diversity Is Strength systematically hammered aesop. This show would be a much more appropriate reference for, say, Justin Trudeau.
I love that guy so much.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.![]()

You'd be surprised. The Sad Puppies (the alt-right of Sci-Fi/Fantasy literature random) had one of the episodes on their Hugo Award nomination list this year. (Though it was one where the main antagonist was an autocrat trying to force equality on a settlement by taking away their cutie marks.)
Was not a joke nomination either (though I suspect the Rabbid Puppies, their meaner offshoot, took it that way and it was really their slate that tore through the nomination list...the Sads were more moderately behaved this year than last.)
Someone in the Arizona delegation is waving an old Mc Cain sign.
"WE WANT TRUMP! WE WANT TRUMP! WE WANT TRUMP!"
This is just fricking depressing...
Also, a black woman is actually speaking in favor of Trump. A black woman. AKA, a minority. The very kind of person that the GOP would like to imagine doesn't exist. Mind blown.

I never got that thinking like this. There are millions of black, Asians, and all minority groups in this country, not to mention a slim a majority of women. Him having a following from each group makes perfect sense, statistically speaking.
People aren't a hive-mind and their are stupid people of all stripes.

Also not surprising, Trump world is speach in the typical "But I wasnt speaking about all black/lating/gay, dosent it?" as far they can tell if they are honest citizen(really the right love saying this) them everything will be ALL RIGHT.
You'd be surprised how bigoted minorities can be. A lot of people in the Chinese community I grew up in are Republican voters despite having once been poor immigrants benefiting from government programs, because the one thing they hate even more than white people is the other races. Same with how a lot of British BME people actually voted Leave, because they think they're of a different, better stock than those *other* immigrants (particularly the Eastern Europeans). And contrary to stereotypes about the "straight white cishet male" demographic, most of the really overt misogyny and homophobia I've encountered in person comes from nonwhite immigrants from countries with less enlightened views on women, including my own relatives.
Which is why I hate this whole idea that "minorities can't be racist", the idea that downtrodden minorities are bastions of progressive views due to their experiences, or any other form of the aforementioned "straight white cishet male" box that ignores the fact that a lot of various forms of bigotry come from people who don't fit into that narrow box. Sometimes the most disenfranchised groups can be incredibly hateful in their own ways and their identities shouldn't be allowed as a Freudian Excuse.
Trump's rhetoric might be really appealing to racist women, Islamophobic gays, homophobic blacks, and misogynistic Hispanics, and so on. Actually from a lot of what I've read, a large percentage of the Latino population has values more in line with the GOP than the Democrats due to their Catholic faith. It's just that the GOP is so virulently racist and anti-immigration that they vote the other way instead. Hate can be a powerful motivator.

Actually you're probably killing a whole lot of members of the lower class who joined up for pay and education, hoping that they'd never actually have to shoot anybody.
Once the shooting starts, the only thing you can do is shoot back. Not worry about how happy the people shooting at you are to be shooting at you.
