Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If they force the vote, we get a result where Trump gets massively embarrassed, which can fuck him up down the line (I don't think someone else will get the nomination).
If it does get violent as a result, which I'm not saying is desirable, it does have a bonus of showing the rest of the country how fucked up Trump's side is. That could make the election outright unwinnable for him.
It's not going to happen. One problem being that this is exactly what the nuts are bringing their guns for, and I don't think those Republicans have enough confidence to actually force a change (assuming all of their support even sticks with them). Another problem is that Trump will almost certainly be pushing very hard to make sure they never have a chance of voting at all, since he's already shown to have a very low tolerance for anyone remotely threatening or disloyal.
Or he could just not give a fuck and think nothing could possibly go wrong.
And if nothing happens, that is (unforunately) the best possible outcome for him in every way. His base is sated, his internal opposition becomes irrelevant, and his personal image as a dauntless leader and "unifier" goes through the roof.

I'm too pessimistic to expect it, buuut I would literally jump for joy if the GOP forced the vote and didn't nominate Trump. I really just want to vote for someone whose a Republican who isn't an annoying orange.
Leviticus 19:34As expected. It seems improbable that they could get a coup going at this late date, with all the preparation the Trump side has had.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's harmful to others around you, too. Three decades of inhaling other people's second-hand smoke has left me with really weak lungs.
I honestly don't know whether cigarettes are more harmful to a person's system than other drugs, but at least if people are doing heroin or something in my vicinity, I can choose not to join in. Smoking is like forcing everyone else in the room to shoot heroin with you, whether they want to or not.
There are few methods of murdering other people that are considered as socially acceptable as making them breathe your toxic nicotine fumes.
Yes. I support ending vice laws, but forcing narcotics to seek FDA approval would be a good way of excluding substances like meth that are exceedingly harmful to consume and harmful to produce as well. The demand is always going to be there, and there's not really anything we can do to get rid of that. Trying to punish the demand just overcrowds prisons, especially when our justice system punishes it asymmetrically between races. Vice laws today mainly exist as an excuse to put black men in prison.
Instead, we should be putting the pressure on the supply line.
I am simultaneously relieved and disappointed. Relieved that this isn't going to turn into a shoot-out, disappointed that yet another attempt to stop Trump's steamroller campaign has been effortlessly demolished in his wake.
Every time Trump crushes all opposition with all the apparent effort of a 15-year-old writing an angry blog post, I worry about whether or not Hillary's going to be able to stop him.

He suggested a purge of racists from the party that would recall the expulsion of the John Birch Society, a fringe nationalist group, from Republican ranks a half-century ago.
That part I bolded is what I'm curious about. What exactly was that all about, and how did that play out?

The article itself is definitely biased, but see this guy
. Unfortunately he also purged the Rockefeller Republicans too, setting the GOP onto its downward spiral of self-reinforcing extremism.
