The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

At this point the Republican party is completely reality proof. Nothing's gonna pop that bubble of theirs.

The base, that is. The leaders know what's what, to a point. Enough not to show up at the con.

That's why I really question everyone's overconfidence in Hillary's victory. If it ends up being a landslide democrat victory, it doesn't look like one right now.

Perrenial Libertarian candidate. A likely option for anti Trump Republicans who can't stomach voting Democrat.

Meh. What's his platform?

So here's another empty scandal involving Hillary Clinton and cattle futures, and a seemingly very improbable lucky streak.

[up][up][up] Are they actually dredging up Whitewater, a decades-old manufactured scandal, from the depths of the river it should have been buried in, or do they have something even slightly new?

Part of the problem is that only something like 20% of the electorate is capable of being swayed by actual facts, and/or of distinguishing them from the overwhelming media noise that assaults them from all sides. So Clinton's impassioned and high-minded speeches are lost in the wind of "OMG she lied once or twice", which, according to the media, gives her equivalency with Donald "truth is for suckers" Trumpster.

Johnson seems to be following the Libertarian's standard economic, ideas of property, and isolationism, along with being more openly social liberal than some of his self-proclaimed "Libertarian" adherents (advocating free access to abortion and marriage equality for all).

Essentially wants to abolish most government programs and safety nets(Federal Reserve, social security, medicare, environmental protection, etc etc), abolish all taxes in favor of a single flat sales tax sufficient enough to fund a bare-bones government, apply massive cuts to military funds and personnel along with abolishing all non-stateside military stuff/bases/nuclear programs and maintain it instead as a small self-defense force.

And Johnson, like many hardcore Libertarians, dimwittedly imagines that this would result in something other than a cutthroat world ruled over by the person with the biggest penis substitute.

Or that he, like most libertarians, assumes he won't be the one getting his throat cut.

Newt Gingrich accused the Bush family of behaving “childishly” by skipping this week’s Republican National Convention and refusing to endorse Donald Trump.

The former speaker of the House, who was widely considered one of the top three vice presidential contenders for Trump, made the comments today on “Good Morning America” in Cleveland, where the convention kicks off.

“The reason people nominated Donald Trump is because they weren’t happy and, frankly, I think the Bushes are behaving childishly,” Gingrich told George Stephanopoulos on “GMA.” “Jeb lost. Get over it.”
