Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And Trump's previous debates were honed to appeal to his base/Republicans. Those exact tactics are going to turn off swing voters and terrify Democrats (and many Republicans) into voting for Clinton. He's already done a lot for the cause of minority voter engagement.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. My deepest and most sincere apologies to orangutans everywhere. It goes back a ways... I’ll try to give you the short version, here: note
A few years back, Bill Maher invited Trump to appear on his show (whatever the one that followed Politically Incorrect was called.) Trump refused, because basically, he has no sense of humor and is afraid of being ridiculed by anybody he can’t bully. Maher shrugged it off, but being a comedian, he did what comedians do: make fun of people who deserve to be made fun of.
In the 2012 presidential election, Trump announced his candidacy. But he was running as a single-issue candidate. He was a Birther. You know, those people who claim that Barack Obama’s presidency was illegitimate, because (they claim) he wasn’t born on US soil, therefore he’s not a native US citizen. Obama ignored these idiots for a few years, then finally produced his original long-form birth certificate, which proved that the Birthers were full of shit.
Trump was silent for a brief moment, then he announced: “I’ll give him $5 million, payable to charity, if he produces his college records.” (What was he thinking? “A black guy, getting into college? Nah, gotta be sump’n fishy there.”)
Hearing this, Maher, while appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, joked, “Look at Trump’s hair. There are only two things in nature with that color hair: Donald Trump, and the orange-haired orangutan. I’ll give $5 million to charity if Trump produces HIS birth certificate, and can prove that his mother didn’t have sex with an ape.” He then went on to suggest a few of the charities that Trump might give the money to: The Hair Club For Men, Safari Club International, etc.
Trump took Maher at his word. Maher received a letter from Trump’s lawyer, a copy of Trump’s birth certificate (short form) and a note saying: “Pay up.” Maher ignored the letter, like he ignores all letters from crazy people, so Trump tried to sue him for breach of contract. Maher remarked, “Trump needs to learn two things: what a joke is, and what a contract is.” Apparently, Trump believes that a tongue-in-cheek comment made by a comedian on a late-night talk show somehow constitutes a legally-binding agreement between said comedian and the person he’s poking fun at.
Maher went on to say that people like Trump shouldn’t be clogging up the courts with frivolous lawsuits. “Our legal system is not a toy for rich idiots to play with. It’s not a collection agency for billionaires.” Trump later dropped the lawsuit. (But he still hasn’t proven that he’s NOT the illegitimate love-child of a lower primate...)
This Space Intentionally Left Blank. There's some evidence that he's been up to this crap since the '80s.
Hard to see him stopping now.
At risk of overthinking the joke: Trump wears a wig IIRC.

Some choice quotes...
This is just incredible.
“You’re running for President,” Schwartz said. “I disagree with a lot of what you’re saying.”
“That’s your right, but then you should have just remained silent. I just want to tell you that I think you’re very disloyal. Without me, you wouldn’t be where you are now. I had a lot of choice of who to have write the book, and I chose you, and I was very generous with you. I know that you gave a lot of speeches and lectures using ‘The Art of the Deal.’ I could have sued you, but I didn’t.”
“My business has nothing to do with ‘The Art of the Deal.’ ”
“That’s not what I’ve been told.”
“You’re running for President of the United States. The stakes here are high.”
“Yeah, they are,” he said. “Have a nice life.” Trump hung up.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotDoesn't surprise me. A disappointing number of hardcore black nationalists hold views that are pretty misogynistic, homophobic, or otherwise Not So Different from racist whites.

That's the stupid part: it's like the right has become so hopped up on the steady diet of lies fed to it by its tame media that it is incapable of realizing that such a thing as truth exists. They simply don't hear the negative things said about their candidate.

I actually fear Hil's performance in any debate with Trump. She can make points, but her charisma leaves something to be desired.
