The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]There's a very broad category of other things that would fit that purpose though.

[up] But I guess that narrows it down

Let's stay classy and not hope that they shoot each other.

I don't think anyone here has expressed that (yet...recently) but the probability of something going badly is high. There's going to be protesters, there's going to be Trump whipping up his followers, there's going to be politicians who are deeply unhappy about the whole thing and may or may not go along with it. Powder keg waiting for a match.

I'm expecting Trump to say/do something that'll fuck up his campaign at the convention. There's no way he'll keep himself in check.

I really hope no one gets hurt or, Twelve forbid, killed at the convention. I've got no love for most republicans but I think your country has had enough with the killings.

Alas, this is Trump we're talking about so I'm ready to be disappointed.

Yeah, I think the only thing we want to die at the convention is Trump's credibility.

[up][up]And the party's political ambitions, ideally. But I don't want to see anyone get hurt, that's awful and fundamentally unhealthy for a democracy.

But the odds of this convention turning into a riot are way higher than they should be.

@ the RNC: the image that springs to mind is that of a monkey (or in this case, an orange-haired orangutan) playing with matches inside a powder keg.

Incidentally, the convention schedule and speaker list for the RNC has been released, and it is a trainwreck. Paul Ryan and Mitch Mc Connel aren't keynote speakers (just regular speakers), but the manager of Eric Trump's winery is.

[up] I was going to say he's more like a baboon, but then I realized baboons still have a better hairstyle than Trump.

[up][up][up] Eric Trump's winery? What...I don't even...oh, forget it.

I was going to say that this Convention was going to basically be a Nuremberg Rally, but now I think that's just unfair to the Nazis.

God, with all of the screwups Trump is making, Hillary better be able to attack him until he's got nothing left.

Well, to be fair, Pence is only running for Vice President. Barring a tie in the Senate or Trump dying in office, Pence making a mistake really wouldn't be all that important.

The vp can still give quite a bad impression (Dan Quayle, anyone?).

I do follow her facebook, I'm talking about during debates and tv ads. I can't wait to see what they come up with.

[up][up]There is no bottom with Trump. He's practically a bottomless pit, falling down through its' infinite black void every waking day while never reaching the end. Only God knows what would happen if he ever somehow reached the non-existent end of it all.
