The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Hallow Hawk: No, Inauguration Day is always January 20th (though it may be observed on the 21st if the 20th is a Sunday). It used to be March 4th.

"Christian fundamentalists aren't people, they're all crazy cultists who want to enact religious law to oppress gays."

Aren't they, though? I mean, the Religious Right is a big part of why the Republican party has become so toxic. If someone is a religious fundamentalist, then that immediately means they support the more horrible and archaic beliefs of their religion (whether they be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc.). You look at what Christian fundamentalists are saying, you see that they're all enormous homophobes, so you really can't call it "stereotyping" or "othering".

It's still stereotyping and othering, it's just that far more fit the stereotype than don't in that case.

Well, a lot of them do literally want to enact laws that oppress gay people, and I think you could argue that they're crazy cultists if you stretch the definitions a bit, but I would draw the line at claiming that they're not people.

I would prefer "salt of the earth" in that context:

Thanks. Sorry to sound off-topic with this, but I want to do something similar to the ending of Thirty Seven Days, but I don't know when to act like how that documentary drama miniseries. Election Day or Inaguration Day?

Apparently the latest poll my Rassmunssen poll shows Trump with a seven-point lead.

Rassmussen is pretty right-leaning and always show the Republicans with a big lead (or at least not as wide a gap between the two and other polls). Any other polls show similar results?

Rasmussen alone has been saying that for weeks. I do wonder what is the difference in their methodology compared to others.

So Hillary plans on introducing a Constitutional amendment to Citizens United in her first 30 days as president.

Um...yeah good luck with that, tho I'm sure it's for the optics alone

Introducing is just that, certainly no promise of it going anywhere. Obviously the amendment process takes months or years.

But I thought Hillary was a Wall Street shill. Why would she try to curb their power? Clearly this is a plot.

She's made her promises, and I'm willing to see what comes of them, but if people aren't continuously pushing for this, it's not going to happen.

More to the point, the president has no role in the constitutional amendment process.

It still sends the message that she's not as corporate as her detractors think. Of course they probably won't give a damn.

There are amendments that have been in the waiting line for decades in the ratification process. Much ado about nothing.

It is an easy promise for her to make, because she can encourage the process and then blame the GOP governors/Congress for blocking it.

[up][up][up]Tell me about it. I'm currently getting dogpiled on Facebook by angry Sanders supporters who a) won't realise/admit that he's dropped out (seriously, they keep asking one another in prior comments about whether he's still in, but then go after me when I inform them that "no, he's conceded") and b) really want to push the idea that they're all going to vote third party. "Look at this polling. A third of us will never support Clinton." A third of the 100 or so of you left maybe.

I'm uncomfortable even calling most GOP politicians "evil" let alone someone with a progressive track record as Clinton.

The hate she gets is truly bizarre

It's more or less impossible to detach sentiments about Hillary Clinton from sentiments about Bill Clinton, for better or worse. Moreover, the two are very politically similar (which is probably part of why they're married); what's really changed since Bill Clinton's years in office is the political climate of America.

Lightysnake Since: May, 2010
#130624: Jul 16th 2016 at 1:59:02 PM

Yes, and Bill governed as he did (And I really wish people would stop pretending he didn't achieve progressive victories) largely because America faced a realignment under the Reagan years and subsequently, Carter, Mondale and Dukakis got their asses kicked in their elections for various reasons. Clinton was the one to rebrand the Democratic party and bring it back to the political forefront after twenty years of being set out in the political wilderness. Progressives have a bit of a tendency to forget that.

If Clinton was running today, it's highly likely he's govern far more to the left. Hillary is not going to govern like Bill did in the 90s.

So a couple reports have come out saying that Trump was very unsure about going with Pence, and was still considering Christie up to the last minute.

Honestly, props to whoever made that stick. Obviously this bodes well for the Republicans who want to the ones be pulling the strings, if Trump can be swayed away from his personal sycophant.
