Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

My issue with the contemporary social justice sphere aren't the ideas being expressed in academic circles, it's how they end up filtering down to the mainstream. Despite the fact that intersectiomality and privilege were devised in part as a conscious effort to improve on the dichotomous class dyamics in early sociological theory, when it boils down to the mainstream it is frequently reduced to the very same "us versus them" mentality that privilege was devised to avoid. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the majority of people in the social justice sphere of even many of them take it that way, but it's enough to be noticeable, and as these ideas become more and more mainstream, I'm very concerned that the number of people adhering to these particular mentalities will grow dramatically.
The attempt to redefine the various -ism's as power plus prejudice is another great example of how these concepts can end up becoming toxic as they filter down to laypeople; the general idea behind power plus prejudice is that society should prioritize the prejudices of groups which have the power to act upon those prejudices on a large scale, but it frequently ends up reduced to "I'm black so by defenition I can't be racist you fucking chink."

Trump's VP announcement has been postponed in light of the Nice attack.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.A part of me wishes we can keep having international tragedies so that the RNC gets postponed indefinitely.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well, Newt Gingrich seems to have set a new low bar for public political discourse in his response to the terrorist attack in Nice, France last night. According to NBC news, Gingrich wants to administer tests to every Muslim in the United States to see whether they believe in Sharia law. Answering "Yes" would get them deported, whether they are citizens or not. Gingrich also wants any person who visits any site favoring ISIS, al Qaeda, or other terrorist groups to be guilty of a felony.
So, this is where we are, folks.

You know when I see the "Nice Attack" headlines I thought they were talking about video games.
So that means, if you try to conduct a bit of research (even the context of "know thine enemy"), you instantly become a felon. The religious right would apply that same policy to sex education, if they could.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Well, you can get arrested for reading Mein Kampf in the subway in Belgium, or so I heard.
It's an interesting read, in that you understand why nobody took Hitler seriously at first. Because that shit is crazy.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. That hashtag, like most hashtags honestly, drives me absolutely batty nuggets.

Most modern "news" outlets have the same motto: We distort, you comply.
What do you mean? Lots of people died, *obviously* it's a terror attack.
Random accidents and tragedies don't happen, that's merely misinformation from the lizard people.
Well, this guy was heavily armed and deliberately targeted civilians for maximum casualties, so if he's not a terrorist in the sense of "person recruited by ISIS or al Qaeda or whatever to kill people", he's doing their work, so the distinction is somewhat moot.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Trump has selected Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his VP. The news conference is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 11:00.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Christie is one of those people that you can both sympathize with and despise to varying degrees. Every time you look at him as a victim of various forces constraining his political actions, you realize that he's also a grade A schoolyard bully who has abused his authority with callous disregard for the people he's serving as governor. Maybe he's got a Freudian Excuse for his behavior, but he's in too deep to get the benefit of the doubt.

Well, managed to increase the gaps between each post, but anxiety is starting to build and this is probably going to get off topic if it isn't already, so I'd like to just end my posting for the time being and not have any more responses.
